Writing Ratios

There are three ways to write ratios – (1) the word “to” (2) a colon : (3) as a fraction.

Ratios are either part to part or ______. Read carefully to decide what the question is asking you. Don’t forget to simplify your answer.

1.  In a classroom, there are 12 girls and 14 boys.

a.  What is the simplified ratio of girls to boys

b.  What is the simplified ratio of girls to all of the students in the classroom?

2.  There are 12 ducks and 9 geese in a certain park. Write the simplified ratio of ducks to geese.

3. During its season, a soccer team won 15 games and lost 6 games.

a.  What is the simplified ratio of the team’s number of wins to the number of loses?

b.  What is the simplified ratio of the number of wins to the number of games played?

Solving Ratio Problems

Strategies to solve ratio problems:

-  Visual model

-  use a ratio table by adding on the ratio

-  use a ratio table and multiply and divide to get to your target number

-  use a tape diagram

-  use double number lines

When solving ratio problems, be careful to label your work. This will help keep you from mixing up the numbers. Always keep your target number in mind.

1. Purple paint is made by mixing red and blue paint in the ratio of 3:2. If you have 30 gallons of purple paint, how much red paint and how much blue paint went into your mix?

2. A 12-ounce package of chocolates contains 42 pieces. How many pieces would you expect in a 8-ounce package?

3. The ratio of boys to girls at a monster truck rally is 4:3. If there are a total of 56 kids at the rally, how many boys and how many girls are there? Show your thinking.

4. James can read 208 pages in 8 hours. Today, he is going to read for 5 hours. If he reads at the same rate, how many pages will he read today? Show your thinking.

5. If the ratios of red marbles to blue marbles is 3:5, how many blue marbles are in a bag of 15 red marbles? Show your thinking.

6. Ella is planning a party for people who love cookies. For every 2 people at the party, she needs to have 3 cookies. How many cookies does Ella need if there are 9 people at her party?

7. Six wheel rotations on a bike takes you 10 yards. How many wheel rotations will it take to go 40 yards?

8. James can send 12 text messages in 8 minutes. At this same rate, how long will it take James to send 30 text messages?

9. Mr. Garcia drove 189 miles in 3 hours. At this rate, how far will he drive in 7 hours?
