R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes special pride in recognizing the myriad achievements of the students of J.W.Nixon High School in Laredo during the 19921993 school year; and

WHEREAS, Committed to the ideal of academic excellence, the school's students have earned the highest exitlevel TAAS scores in the district for three consecutive years, and it is the only school to have achieved TAAS academic recognition in the past year; and

WHEREAS, In athletic competition, the Nixon soccer team placed first among its challengers in the Laredo Independent School District (LISD) tournament and earned a secondplace finish at the district level, while the freshman football team won first place in the district; the school's crosscountry team also has excelled, placing second in district and qualifying for regional competition; and

WHEREAS, The strong emphasis placed on science at the school has played a pivotal role in ensuring its continued success in the LISD Science Fair; this year, Melissa Medina earned top honors at the fair and represented her school at the national competition in Mississippi; following her strong showing, Nixon High School was named the overall winner of the International Science & Engineering Fair for the eighth consecutive year; and

WHEREAS, The J.W.Nixon Band also is celebrating its achievements this year as the recipient of eight consecutive sweepstakes awards in UIL Region Honor Band competition; in addition, the band was honored as the Grand Champion Band at the AllAmerican Music Festival and was singled out as the Outstanding Wind Ensemble for the state; and

WHEREAS, Over the course of the year, the school's theater arts department earned first place in the district in UIL oneact play competition, and three students qualified for participation in the state debate and journalism tournament; and

WHEREAS, Many Nixon High School students have been presented with individual honors this year, including National Merit Scholar Gina Sauceda; Melissa Medina, who was named the school's first Student of the Year; Cordy Bernal, Betty Neumann, and Gina Sauceda, all of whom received Student of the Month honors; and a host of others too numerous to mention who have been selected to participate in special programs and events that are being held throughout the nation; and

WHEREAS, These exceptional students have brought great acclaim to their school through their outstanding accomplishments; their creativity, intelligence, and determination typify the finest qualities of our state's young people, and they are indeed deserving of special legislative praise and recognition for their extensive achievements; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas Legislature hereby commend the students of J.W.Nixon High School for their impressive record of academic, athletic, and extracurricular achievements during the 19921993 school year and extend to these fine students sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness as they face the challenges that lie ahead; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for prominent display at J.W.Nixon High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
