A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Joy Bale Boone.
With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Joy Bale Boone, and we pause in silent reverence for her soul.
WHEREAS, Joy Bale Boone was born on October 29, 1912, a native of Chicago, Illinois, and longtime resident of Barren and Todd counties, and she traversed these earthly bounds on October 1, 2002; and
WHEREAS, Joy Bale Boone was the loving daughter of the late William Sydney and Edith M. Field; she was the devoted wife of her first husband, the late Dr. S. Garnett Bale of Elizabethtown, and her surviving husband, George Street Boone of Elkton; she was the adored mother of six children, Shelby G. Bale of Glasgow, Barbara O. Bale of Lexington, Daryl Bale Vann and her husband, "Pat," of Glasgow, Dr. Richard H. Bale and his wife, Gina, of Spokane, Washington, Dr. Bradley F. Bale and his wife, Kristen, of Glasgow, and a daughter-in-law, Robin Bale of Tacoma, Washington; and she was the proud grandmother of fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Joy Bale Boone founded and edited Approaches, a Kentucky poetry journal, and she edited two anthologies of Kentucky poetry; she served on the editorial board of the University Press of Kentucky, and on the board of the Friends of Kentucky Libraries, where she was instrumental in establishing Kentucky's bookmobile systems; and she was cofounder and past chair of the Center for Robert Penn Warren Studies at Western Kentucky University; and
WHEREAS, Joy Bale Boone founded the Elizabethtown League of Women Voters; she reviewed books for the Louisville Courier-Journal for more than fifty years and on WIEL radio in Elizabethtown; and on the state level, she was active in mental health and medical associations, the Heart Association and the Humanities Council; and
WHEREAS, among her special recognitions, Joy Bale Boone was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in humanities from Western Kentucky University, the Sullivan Medallion from the University of Kentucky, and the Kentucky School Board Association "Friend of Education" Award; she was designated Kentucky Poet Laureate by the General Assembly from 1997 to 1999; she served on the old Kentucky Council on Higher Education, the University of Kentucky board of the Gaines Center for Humanities, the Thomas Clark Foundation, the Advisory Board to Western Kentucky University, the Advisory Committee of Kentucky Educational Television, and the Kentucky Council on Higher Education; and
WHEREAS, Joy Bale Boone was highly esteemed in the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a literary figure, and she devoted countless hours to numerous charitable and civic organizations; and her generosity and affable manner will be sorely missed by those who had the good fortune of being associated with her; and
WHEREAS, the passing of Joy Bale Boone has left a void that cannot be filled, and she is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its profound sense of bereavement and loss upon the passing of Joy Bale Boone, who brought to this great Commonwealth the enthusiasm and optimism she displayed throughout her life, and extends to her family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.
Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Joy Bale Boone.
Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mr. Shelby G. Bale, 118 Wingate Avenue, Glasgow, Kentucky 42141.
