There is a joke lined with much truth in Colorado regarding the weather conditions and that is if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes and it will change. We want you to have a great time, while being safe during your journey. So take a bit of extra time evaluating your own personal situation and plan accordingly! Now onto the list!
- Dinosaur National Monument – where both the wild of the past and present comes to life! You may have heard that we have dinosaurs here; well we have those and much more! Sure you can see dinosaur bones and learn the newest methods used by modern paleontologists, but you will have to go to the Utah side for that, but the true wildness and raw beauty lies on the Colorado side of the Monument. Why nottake a couple of days to explore to about the rich cultural history of Dinosaur National Monument.
- Maybell Heritage Days and Sombrero Ranches Horse Drive, which is the most prevalent horse-drive in the Western United States, where 700 – 1000 horses are driven through the center of town. Truly a sight to remember, come and join us as we kick off summer in Maybell, Colorado.
- The Gates of Lodore on the eastern border of Dinosaur National Monument has been said to exceed the breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon so don’t forget to bring your camera! If you miss a visit to the Gates, your journey will be incomplete until you have rested your feet and taken in the expansive beauty.
- White Water Rafting – if you want rafting, we have both the beauty and the brawn! The beautiful and wild meandering Yampa River runs through the whole of Moffat County, and is truly the life blood of all things living. Many white water rafters enjoy rafting the Green River, where they enter the river in Utah, merging with the Yampa in Dinosaur National Monument in the western part of the county.
- Museum of Northwest Colorado – home to the Cowboys and Gunfighters collection. The Museum of Northwest Colorado is home to the most comprehensive and most photographed collections ofCowboy and Western gear in the world. It is not the biggest collection, but with over a 1,000 pieces,representing over 40 categories of western gear, it truly is a “one of a kind” collection. Admission is free and is open 7-days a week.
- Sand Wash Basin Horse Management Area – sitting on more than 160,000 acres, this area is home to one of the largest, managed wild horse herds in the world. Travelers come from all over the world to visit this mysterious place year-after-year.
- Whittle the Wood Rendezvous – chain saw wood sculptures created by regional and national artists. This is an annual event held in early June, bringing 10,000 people to the center of Craig over a wonderful 3-day eventfilled with food, arts and crafts,music, and fun for the entire family.
- Hunting keeps the county bustling in the fall/winter seasons. We are home to the largest migratory elk herd in the United States. Many states claim they have the largest herd, but none have the largest migratory herd, and as you might know, there is a vast difference. Additionally, individuals hunt deer, elk, antelope, mountain lion, bear, as well as a myriad of small game, including sage grouse, geese, pigeons and yes, the occasional bobcat.
- Wyman Living History Museum – located on the eastern edge of Moffat County. Your visit would not be complete without stopping here along your journey. This is a magical place where the stories of settlement and the struggles and triumphs of both the pioneers and industrialists from long ago are told. They made their mark upon the landscape and changed the West forever and now.
- Harper’s Corner, where the Yampa and the Green Rivers converge within Dinosaur National Monument, is one of the most photographed locations in the Western United States. If you go, be ready for a fun and strenuous hike; be sure to bring lots of batteries for your camera!
