SURVEY: CONSUMERS ARE UPBEAT ABOUT 2017

YOUNG DEMOS SEE FINANCES IMPROVING

The majority of consumers see a brighter future for 2017, according the latest IRI Consumer Connect survey. The findings from the early January survey reveal that 70% of consumers feel their household finances will improve in the next six months, and they are willing to pay a premium for higher quality and highly differentiated packaged goods products. Also, they are willing to pay EXTRA for the convenience of shopping online. “Consumers are feeling optimistic about their finances but splurge-worthy priorities and money-saving strategies differ by shopper,” said IRI VP Susan Viamari.

The survey results point to a gap between younger and older consumers regarding improvements in their household finances for the first half of 2017. 33% of 18- to 34-year-olds and 38% of 35- to 54-year-olds think their personal finances will improve, while only 18% of 55- to 64-year-olds and 11% of those aged 65-plus think their finances will improve.

Meanwhile, optimism about future financial health is fairly consistent across income ranges. Among those expecting improvements: 24% are consumers who earn $35,000 or less; 24% are consumers who earn $35,000 to $54,000; 25% are consumers who earn $55,000 to $99,000; and 21% are consumers who earn $100,000 or more. This financial optimism cuts across ethnic backgrounds: 24% are African American, 3% Asian, 14% Hispanic and 62% are white consumers feeling their household finances will improve in 2017.

Despite widespread optimism, deal-seeking remains pervasive, as consumers look to spend their hard-earned money wisely. And, among the one-third of consumers who remain concerned and expect their financial position to deteriorate in the coming six months, deal-seeking is even more common. 85% of these pessimistic consumers will buy private label to save money compared to 81% of the overall population. And 61% of pessimistic consumers will compare prices on retailers’ websites to find the lowest prices compared to 50% of the overall population.

For the upbeat, though, consumer packaged goods (CPG) buyers are willing to splurge a bit for natural and organic products, food and beverage products with additional benefits such as antioxidants, and for environmentally friendly household cleaners. Consumers also are willing to pay more for the product selection and the convenience of shopping online. Overall, 33% of optimistic consumers and 20% of the overall population say they will pay more to order products online and have them delivered to their home.

“Consumers will spend more to get more, but it’s important that CPG marketers provide reassurances and encouragement throughout the year through the use of targeted messaging that reinforces the value proposition,” concludes Viamari.

AUTO SALES JUST MISS PER STORE RECORD

As Fiat Chrysler Automobiles talks about adding hundreds of new dealerships this year, an annual report from Urban Science says the total number of auto dealerships held pretty steady last year—but sales were strong and the industry just missed setting a new per-dealership sales record.

As of January 1, 2017, there were 18,170 dealerships (rooftops), a 0.5% increase from January 1, 2016 total of 18,087. The number of franchises, or brands a dealership sells, also experienced a period of stability, slightly increasing from 31,776 on January 1, 2016, to 32,011 as of January 1, 2017.

“The sales throughput for 2016 was 965 per dealership. This throughput missed setting another record level by one unit due to the stable but increasing count of dealerships in 2016,” said Mitchell Phillips at Urban Science’s.

Over the past six years, Phillips says 96% of local markets had virtually no net change in the number of dealerships (flat or +/- 1 dealership). The most significant (net) dealership increases occurred in Texas (+15), Florida (+14), Arizona, (+9) and Massachusetts, (+8),
