Pender United Methodist Church

Philippi West Virginia mission trip

July 23 – July 31, 2010

Information Packet

Philippi, West Virginia

It’s time for the exciting, wonderful, annual youth mission trip to Philippi, West Virginia. This year’s trip will be from July 23 – July 31, 2010. Our main job will be to build a 12 X 16 addition onto a house. There will also be a handicap ramp installed leading out from the room. The room will be used by a person who is bound to a wheel chair. We will also put in a side walk going from the ramp to the parking area and digging a small trench for the water to run from the house.

We will also have opportunities to build solar panels with a possibility to install some.

We will meet at Pender at 10:00am July 23rd and then leave to begin our mission journey. We will return home to Pender on July 31st in the afternoon. You will need extra money for stops along the way down and back as well as money for spending and for offering at the church service. All other expenses are covered in the cost of the trip except spending money while in Philippi.

We will be staying at the Community Center on the Ridge in dorm style facilities. We will lead the evening worship services at the community center each evening.

Cost per trip

The cost is $195.00 per person; this will include lodging, meals, transportation, and the rafting trip.

There will be a $50.00 non-refundable deposit due to reserve your spot no later than June 14, 2009. PLEASE SIGN UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

What do I wear? What do I bring?

Please bring clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or possibly damaged on the job worksite. Appalachia has a conservative culture and we want to be sensitive to that. Shorts are fine – short shorts are not appropriate for either day or evening. Please leave low cut tops, cami’s, spaghetti straps or strapless at home. Please refrain from mid-driff or sports bras as outerwear. Please bring clothes to wear to church on Sunday and Wednesday evening (not shorts for church). Temperatures are usually quite warm in the daytime, but the mountains can be cool or at night or when it’s rainy or cloudy, so bring along a light jacket or sweatshirt. Please bring enough changes of clothes to cover your stay, toiletries (soap, shampoo, deodorant). There is electricity for hair dryers, etc. as long as we all don’t use it at once!

Bring your own towels, sleeping bag or linens and your pillow.

Also bring a Bible, notebook and pen, flashlight and extra batteries.

Evening Worship and Quiet Times

Each night we will be leading an informal time of praise singing and searching God’s Word to keep all of us growing spiritually. While we give to others we must fill ourselves with the Holy Spirit daily so that we can be effective ministers. We will have large and small group discussions at the Ridge after dinner each night, and we will share with each other about our work during the day, our feelings about where we are and how the Lord is working through us and in our hearts while we’re there. Pray about how you can be a leader of worship in some way – a prayer, reading scripture, leading a devotion, talking about your walk with God, singing a song, playing an instrument, sharing your own creative worship.
