GOOD NEWS - we want to celebrate the many successes occurring in arts education in North Carolina! If you have a “good news” item that you feel is appropriate to share with stakeholders throughout the state, please email the item to or . Submissions should be focused on arts education accomplishments (examples would include teacher of the year designation – system or regional; innovative programs; regional, state or national recognition, awards, honors; etc) and should be limited to 100 words or less. The Arts Education consultants have the editorial right to screen and/or edit items before publication.
ART AWARDS IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY
Nick Batounis and Patricia Lyles received $1000.00 dollars from the Oak Island Art guild to purchase art materials at Cheap Joe's for this 2010-2011 school year. Patricia Lyles also got a Brunswick County arts grant to help with the room expenses at the NC Art Education Association conference, which will take place later this month in New Bern, NC.
OCTOBER IS NATIONAL ARTS AND HUMANITIES MONTH (NAHM)

NC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES COMPONENTS OF NEW ACCOUNTABILITY MODEL FOR STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS
The State Board of Education last week approved a new student and school accountability model to begin in 2013-14 that focuses on college and career readiness. The new model - under development for more than two years - has two primary purposes: diagnosing student learning to ensure students are on track academically and providing school accountability. These changes are part of the state’s “Career & College: Ready, Set Go!” plan for education in North Carolina.
2010 NCDA SUE STINSON GRANT
The NC Dance Alliance is pleased to announce The Sue Stinson Grant, to be awarded in October 2010. This grant is a special one-time grant for $500. If you are a dance artist and public school teacher who wants to collaborate, this is your opportunity. The application includes a short form, a budget, and a one-page narrative. NCDA MINI-GRANTS - NEW CATEGORIES & APPLICATION
The NC Dance Alliance announces NEW grant categories and a NEW application for Mini-grants. Categories include: Technical & Production Assistance, College/High School Residency, or Community Project/Outreach Activities. Apply for up to $200 to fund your dance project. The new application includes a short form, a budget and a one-page narrative in reference to your specific category. FREE EVENTS: NC CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN STRING TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
The North Carolina Chapter of The American String Teachers Association (NC ASTA) presents "An Evening with the Christian Howes Trio" on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. The evening includes two free events that are open to the public. At 6:00 PM, there will be a workshop geared for teachers, students, and all players, with a concert starting at 8:00 PM. Both events will take place at the NC School of Science and Math in the Educational Technology Center on Maryland Avenue in Durham (visit www.ncssm.edu for more information about the location). FROM THE MASTER CLASS TO THE CLASSROOM, AT HOME AND AFTER SCHOOL

ARTS EDUCATION ESSENTIAL STANDARDS
The Arts Education Essential Standards (Version 3.0) are posted online at: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/phase2/. The standards were approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) on September 2, 2010 and are scheduled to be implemented during the 2012-13 school year. Please stay tuned to the arts education listserv update for additional information as the Arts Education Essential Standards move through the development of Instructional Toolkits, professional development, and other support that will accompany the implementation of the standards.

THE KENNEDY CENTER/STEPHEN SONDHEIM INSPIRATIONAL TEACHER AWARDS
