Request for Secondary Assignment: Adjunct Faculty- Instructional (Credit and Non-Credit)

This form is to be used to authorize a current adjunct faculty member to engage in a secondary instructional assignment at VCU. . The hiring department for the secondary assignment (the secondary unit) initiates this form and the supervisor of the primary job completes the request.IMPORTANT NOTE:There are Federal and State laws that apply to these part-time positions, including restrictions on hours permitted to workper week. Both the primary and secondary units must ensure compliance with the Secondary Assignments policy (formerly Overload Jobs) Policy. Some of the key restrictions are noted below.

  • Adjunct faculty are not permitted to work more than twenty-nine (29) hours per week on average and no more than 1480 hours during the 12-month period of May 1st to April 30th, including classroom or other instructional time plus additional hours needed to perform the duties of this position
  • The maximum number of credit hours that an adjunct may teach during the course of twelve (12) months (from May 1st to the following April 30th) is limited to no more than nine (9) credit hours in the Spring semester, nine (9) credit hours in the Fall semester, and six (6) credit hours in the Summer for a total of twenty-four (24) credit hours. If at any time during this 12-month period it is determined that the projected hours might exceed this hourly limit, the adjunct’s hours must be reduced and/or the adjunct position may be subject to earlier termination.
  • The secondary assignment is directly related to the individual’s primary job, otherwise a search must first be conducted for the secondary assignment
  • Adjunct faculty with a primary job which is supported by grant funding may not hold secondary assignments except when the sponsoring party has specifically documented the arrangement in writing
  • Employees on certain visas must contact VCU’s Global Education Office for additional approvals and procedures
