FOSS Science Curriculum

Physics of Sound

In this unit students will:

Learn to discriminate between sounds generated by dropped objects;

Learn how sounds can be made louder or softer and higher or lower;

Learn how sounds travel through a variety of materials;

Learn how sounds get from a source to a receiver;

Exercise language, social studies and math skills in the context of the physics of sound;

Use knowledge of the physics of sound to solve simple sound challenges; and

Acoustical Engineering

Sounds Like Fun!: Seeing Animal Sounds

Storybook: Kwame’s Sound

This is the story of Kwame, a young, blind drummer from Ghana. His father is an acoustical engineer and brings Kwame into the forest where he hears the elephants that are the subjects of his father’s work. Kwame is introduced to the possibility of visually or tactilely representing sound.

Students will investigate ways to damp sound and then focus on developing a tactile diagram of sound that captures its key elements and communicates the sound clearly to others.

Participation in all 3 Saturdays is recommended, but not required, as concepts will build on each other.
