Shopkeepers and Shoppers
People running shops are called shopkeepers. Bakers, grocers, booksellers, butchers, greengrocers are shopkeepers: they all own or are in charge of small shops where they sell goods. Thus a grocer sells groceries, a greengrocer sells fruit and vegetables, a butcher sells meat and chicken, and so on. They all carry on the business of buying and selling, that is, they are tradesmen.(1)
Each shopkeeper, then, carries on a different type of business. If we assume that Mr Jones is an ironmonger, the line of business he deals in is hardware and such items as nails, screws and bolts, paints, tools, etc. are the single products he sells. Likewise a stationer is a person who keeps a shop for selling stationary, that is, writing paper, office materials, etc; a newsagent is a person in charge of a shop selling newspapers and magazines; a bookseller is a person who sells books or runs a bookshop; a draper is a shopkeeper who sells women's clothes, cloth, curtains; a chemist is a person who runs a shop (pharmacy or drugstore) for selling medicines and beauty products; a baker is a person who keeps a shop (a bakery) for the sale of bread and cakes; a grocer runs a shop (a grocery) for the sale of groceries, that is, sugar, tea, coffee, tinned meat, biscuits, etc.
People who are buying things in a shop are called 'shoppers'. If they are accustomed to do regular shopping at a given place they are 'customers'. They are generally provided with a 'shopping list', which is a set of names of things to buy, and a 'shopping bag' where to put the items or articles they buy.
(1)The word 'tradesman', however, has a double meaning. Just like 'trade' which means either interchange or craft, a tradesman may be a shopkeeper or a craftsman. This latter term applies to a carpenter, a plumber, a mechanic, an electrician, a bricklayer, etc. These people have learned a trade, which is the kind of work they do. We are used to say, in fact, 'he is a plumber by trade'. They are men whose job is making things skilfully with their hands.
