M: The Lord has risen!

C: He has risen, indeed! Hallelujah!

- WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND ARE ASSURED OF FORGIVENESS -

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy..

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

- WE PRAISE THE LORD -

M: In the peace of God’s forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

C: THE PSALM OF THE DAY: “This Is the Day” (the refrain is from the “Easter psalm”, #118) (Worship Supplemental Hymnal, #304)

Refrain: This is the day that the Lord has made! Rejoice! Rejoice and be exceeding glad! This is the day that the Lord has made! Rejoice! Rejoice! Hallelujah!

Verse 1: Christ has conquered death at last, Left the tomb that held him fast! Gone the sorrow, gone the night; Dawns the morning clear and bright! (Refrain:)

Verse 2: Jesus lives who once was dead, Crown of glory on his head! Risen now our Lord and King; Songs of gladness let us sing. (Refrain:)

PRAYER OF THE DAY (all):

Heavenly Father, by the glorious resurrection of your Son you conquered death and opened the gate to eternal life. Strengthen us by our Savior’s victory to put away sin and lead a holy life. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen.

-- WE LISTEN TO THE WORD –

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Exodus 15::1-11

1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD :
"I will sing to the LORD,
for he is highly exalted.
The horse and its rider
he has hurled into the sea.

2 The LORD is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father's God, and I will exalt him.

3 The LORD is a warrior;
the LORD is his name.

4 Pharaoh's chariots and his army
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh's officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.

5 The deep waters have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.

6 "Your right hand, O LORD,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand, O LORD,
shattered the enemy.

7 In the greatness of your majesty
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;
it consumed them like stubble.

8 By the blast of your nostrils
the waters piled up.
The surging waters stood firm like a wall;
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.

9 "The enemy boasted,
'I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.'

10 But you blew with your breath,
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.

11 "Who among the gods is like you, O LORD ?
Who is like you—
majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory,
working wonders?

CHOIR: “Hail, Hosanna”

EPISTLE READING: I Corinthians 15:51-57 (read by the men)

51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."[a]
55"Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?"[b] 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

CHOIR SONG: “Risen Up”

GOSPEL READING I: Luke 24:1-11

1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " 8Then they remembered his words.

9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

HYMN: CW #152 vs. 1-4: “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”

I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living Head!

He lives triumphant from the grave; He lives eternally to save .He lives all-glorious in the sky; He lives exalted there on high.

He lives to bless me with his love; He lives to plead for me above. He lives, my hungry soul to feed; He lives to help in time of need.

He lives to grant me rich supply; He lives to guide me with his eye. He lives to comfort me when faint; He lives to hear my soul's complaint.

GOSPEL READING II: John 20:1-9

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

HYMN: CW #150, vs. 1,2,4: “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today; Alleluia!”

Christ the Lord is ris'n today; Alleluia!

Christians, hasten on your way; Alleluia!

See the place where he was laid; Alleluia!

Praise him for the ransom paid. Alleluia!

For the sheep the Lamb has bled, Alleluia!

Sinless in the sinners' stead. Alleluia!

"Christ is ris'n," today we cry; Alleluia!

Now he lives, no more to die. Alleluia!

Christ, who once for sinners bled, Alleluia!

Now the first-born from the dead, Alleluia!

Throned in endless might and pow'r, Alleluia!

Lives and reigns forevermore. Alleluia!

GOSPEL READING III: John 20:10-18

10Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"

"They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

15"Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?"
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."

16Jesus said to her, "Mary."
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).

17Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "

18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.

HYMN: CW #149: “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today”

“Christ the Lord is ris’n today!” Saints on earth and angels say; Raise your joys and triumphs high; Sing, O heav’ns, and earth, reply.

Love’s redeeming work is done, Fought the fight, the battle won; Lo, our sun’s eclipse is o’er; Lo, he sets in blood no more.

Lives again our glorious King! Where, O death, is now your sting? Once he died our souls to save; Where your victory, O grave?

Soar we now where Christ has led, Foll’wing our exalted head. Made like him, like him we rise; Ours the cross, the grave, the skies!

Hail the Lord of earth and heav’n! Praise to you by both be giv’n! God has now fulfilled his Word; Praise the resurrected Lord!

THE MESSAGE FROM GOD’S WORD

II.  God Sent Them Because Jesus Wasn’t

THE EASTER CONFESSION OF FAITH --

The Explanation to the 3rd Article of the Apostles Creed:

I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him.

But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers.

On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.

This is most certainly true.
