Census Exercise

Tables from the 1980 Censuses of Population and Housing—Tract #3531

The Bureau of the Census prepared the following tables from tract data for the 1980 Censuses of Population and Housing to summarize the general characteristics and the social characteristics of the population. Note that data are not necessarily reported in each table for tract #3531 because there were not enough cases to make the statistical summaries reliable. Also note that income and poverty status are ascertained for 1979 (not 1980). Why?

In the tables, three dots “...” mean “not applicable” or that the data are being withheld to avoid disclosure of information for individuals or housing units. The latter happens when the number of cases is small. A dash “-” represents zero, a figure less than 0.1, or a percent that rounds to less than 0.1%.

Note carefully the indenting in census tables. A line that is indented is always a subset of the last category above it that is not indented. Often, but not always, the indented subcategories add up to the category from which they have been indented.

At the bottom of table P-9 I have erased a number of labels so that you will not be able to identify the location of the tract. As a result, you will not be able to use all of the detailed subcategories of that variable. This should not prove to be too big a problem, since the major point of the variable is made by the main subcategories that remain identified in the table.

The Bureau of the Census prepared the following tables from tract data for the 1990 Censuses of Population and Housing to summarize the general characteristics and the social characteristics of the population. Note that data are not necessarily reported in each table for tract #3531 because there were not enough cases to make the statistical summaries reliable. In the tables, three dots “...” mean “not applicable” and a dash “-” represents zero, a figure less than 0.1, or a percent that rounds to less than 0.1%.

Note that the threshold for inclusion of a tract in a table continues to be a minimum of 400 persons in the population subgroup(s) that the table is analyzing.

Note carefully the indenting in census tables. A line that is indented is always a subset of the last category above it that is not indented. Often, but not always, the indented subcategories add up to the category from which they have been indented.

At the bottom of Table 17 I have erased a number of labels so that you will not be able to identify the location of the tract. As a result, you will not be able to use all of the detailed subcategories of that variable. This should not prove to be too big a problem, since the major point of the variable is made by the main subcategories that remain identified in the table.
