Abstract of my thesis
Key words: Performance, Efficiency, profitability, Growth, Cost per job, The Gaza Strip, The West Bank, The New Palestinian Entity, Small-scale Industries.
This study examines the performance of the industrial sector in the Gaza Strip (GS), The study compares characteristics of firms as well as performance and efficiency indicators for different types, sizes and local or sub-contracting firms. The study also investigates and analyses restrictions and problems face the industry in the GS, both local and Israeli. We use mainly primary data collected from the GS. Differences between means has been used to find any significant differences between firms in terms of profit ratio, profit margin, labour-productivity, capital-productivity, growth rate and cost per job, as well as some differences in terms of characteristics of firms.
The linear regression and the logistic models are used to determine factors affecting the indicators for all the industries in the GS as well as for each size and sub-sector within the industrial sector. The logistic model is mainly used to find different factors affecting successful and growing firms compared with less-successful and non-growing firms; it is also used to analyse local and subcontracting firms.
The study shows the structure of the industrial sector and the concentration on clothing and sub-contracting firms as a source of employment and profit is the first indicator of the effect of the Israeli restrictions. Other indicators are the high death rate experienced in the industrial sector (25%) in a short period between 1994-1996, and especially in Food and Others group (32%). The negative growth of employment for Food and Others group is also an indicator.
The industry in the GS in general is lacking raw materials and financial support, while Clothing and sub-contracting firms overcame this problem with the help of their Israeli partners, and also due to the labour-intensive techniques used.
In general the small-firm size performs better than the micro-size, which means that it is important to increase the size of firms in the GS, and transfer the micro-firms into small ones. Among the sub-sectors Clothing group is the most efficient in creating cheap jobs although LP is low. Clothing firms are also achieving higher PR, using labour-intensive techniques, which are suitable probably to the case of the GS. However, we suggest that the government has to find an alternative to this industry with same level of efficiency. This suggestion may seem to be surprising, but it is necessary to reduce dependence on Clothing firms that work as sub-contractors to Israeli firms under uncertainly.
