Structures & Strategies – Netball
High Five Netball – Team Formation
The team formation of High Five Netball involves Five Players; Goal Keeper (GK), Goal Defence (GD), Centre (C), Goal Attack (GA), Goal Shooter (GS). Each player has a different role within the team structure (Look at your Netball Booklets for the different roles!)
Strategy – High Five Netball – Sideline Pass
The sideline pass uses three main players; GD, C & GA. They each have a different role depending on the sideline pass being used (Check out Sideline pass sheets; work out the roles of each player!)
Principles of Play
In Netball, it is important to try and create space, as it allows for better passing opportunities and keeps the ball away from opposition. To create space you need to think about how to get away from your marker. You might do this by changing speed and/or changing direction.
Speed of play is important in Netball, as it allows better scoring opportunities. The quicker the ball can be moved up the court the less prepared the opposition are. This requires good team work and communication.
Using the width of the court is important in Netball, as it helps to create space and provide better passing opportunities. The GD, C & GA should be working together and moving into wide positions to receive passes.
Collecting Information
Video Analysis was used to collect information of team performances. We looked specifically at attacking sideline passes. As we watched the video, we filled out an observation schedule that focussed on; Player to receive 1st pass, Player to receive 2nd pass & was space created.
The majority of Sideline passes were not successful, some of the reasons why include;
§ No space was created
§ Speed of play was slow
§ No movement
§ Lack of width
§ Interceptions by opposition
§ Lack of shooting opportunities created
To overcome these problems, we developed our sideline pass strategies and devised three different strategies. We practiced these strategies without opposition to start with then progressed to practicing with opposition. We worked on communication, creating space & using width to try and make our sideline pass strategies successful.
Developing these strategies has a positive effect on our team performance. We were working together as a team, communicating and all trying our best. There were fewer interceptions due to the speed of play increasing and players were creating more space for successful passes to be received. We had more shooting opportunities due to the speed of play, as the ball was being passed quickly and the opposition were caught of guard.
