Riviera Tuition was founded by Emma Walton (B.A (Hons), PGCE) in 2010, with the intention of providing parents and pupils with a professional and personal tuition service that boosts confidence and achieves great academic results.
Emma is a highly qualified, young, dynamic teacher, who is determined to provide every child with tuition that is personalised, focused and structured, in order to help them achieve their full potential. Emma prides herself on having a wealth of experience and knowledge in preparing pupils specifically for the 11+ Entrance Examinations in Torbay.
Accurate assessments of each child's abilities are conducted in the initial session. This assessment is used to create an individualised tuition plan that will provide short-term targets that are continually reviewed for long-term success.
Riviera Tuition offers small group tuition consisting of no more than 5 children per lesson. During these sessions pupils are taught key skills; homework and test papers are marked outside of the lesson and form the basis of weekly feedback on progress.Therefore, no valuable teaching time is wasted. We also offer 1-2-1 tuition, if clients require it.
Courses
Year 4 – 11+ Club
Tuition starts in year 4 and has been proven to prepare pupils by securing the building blocks of KS2 Maths and Literacy that are needed for the 11 plus. The course aims to sharpen up the core numeracy skills before advancing on to the more difficult concepts taught in the year 5 course – 11+ preparation. This course would be beneficial to children who need to boost their confidence and competence in their Maths and English skills.
Year 5 – 11+ preparation
Year 5 tuition starts in October and reinforces and extends the skills and concepts introduced in the Year 4; 11+Club. Pupils continue to develop their core numeracy and literacy skills and are introduced to the Verbal Reasoning. The course consists of weekly lessons lasting for an hour and a half during term times and holidays. The session is divided into three half an hour slots to cover English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Teaching is again in small groups of up to 4 students and covers all the key skills required in order to be successful in the 11+.
What additional material is provided?
Upon commencing tuition, each child is provided with a personalised tuition plan that aims to monitor their progression and is continually reviewed and adapted to meet any areas of learning that need attention and/or development.
Children are also provided with a range of resources to aid their learning and assessment check-lists which are used by teacher, student and parent to monitor and assess their progression. This acts as a good indicator to the parent and teacher to see the working knowledge the child has, which areas the child is finding difficult/easy and where their current strengths and weaknesses lie. They will also be provided with homework after each lesson in order to support and continue their learning in lessons at home.
Maths 11+ course content
The Maths course has been carefully and professionally designed by experienced teachers who understand exactly what children struggle with when they start 11+ tuition. An initial focus on the core numeracy skills is essential before teaching the more difficult concepts tested in the 11plus. The course is based upon concepts within the National Curriculum up to and including level 5. Some of the problems set will involve manipulation and application of these concepts in what may be unfamiliar situations thereby testing pupils' problem solving abilities.
We will then work towards preparing students to work at speed and apply their knowledge to questions that require them to think outside the box.

English Course Content
The nature of the 11plus English paper in the Torbay LEA has changed in recent years and naturally our course has adapted to reflect this. T
The writing section will require pupils to write in a range of non-fiction or fictional styles studied in KS2. These may range from descriptive writing, stories to newspaper reports, persuasive writing, formal and informal letter writing, speeches and autobiographical essays.All of these forms demand a keen focus on the ability to produce writing which is suited to a specific audience and purpose while using a range of appropriate literary and persuasive devices.
The English course aims to prepare students for the following:
Identifying target audience and purpose.
Learning the key features and techniques used in all the different writing genres that may be tested.
Choosing formal / informal language best suited to the purpose and audience.
Using a range of punctuation to shape meaning as well as grammar and its application. This syllabus is drawn from the new government Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test (SPaG) launched for year 6 in 2013.
Developing a wide and elaborate vocabulary.
Identifying and using literary devices such as similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration etc.
Developing confidence in writing in a wide range of styles and genres.
Improving spelling by revising key phonemes used in common spellings, homophones, homonyms and numerous spelling rules.
Building key analytical skills in reading tasks.
CEM Course Content
The CEM papers test verbal ability in the form of comprehension, vocabulary (synonyms and antonyms) and cloze passages. It also assesses numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning to test logic. Unfortunately, the University of Durham who supplies the CEM do not produce them commercially and therefore there is no official practice material available. However, a familiarisation booklet will be given to all pupils before they take the test to allow them to get a feelfor what types of questions will present on the day. We also use a large range of practice material that has been put together from other CEM 11+ tests around the UK with our pupils to ensure that they are very familiar with all types of questions that may appear. Making sure your child reads lots of challenging books throughout Year 5 and keeping a small vocabulary notebook to compile a bank of new words they find, helps greatly in building a strong vocabulary for the test!
We focus on teaching the following CEM question types during the course of the year:
Cloze passages
Vocabulary questions (synonyms, antonyms, jumbled sentences, two words joined together and odd words out)
Multiple choice comprehensions
Numerical reasoning
Logical reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning
Although the 11+ course follows a clear programme and structure, individual attention will always be given to those students who are struggling on a particular concept. No student gets left behind!
Information about the 11+ admissions in Torbay
The 11+ is a statutory exam taken by a child if they wish to gain a place at one of the selective schools within Torbay. The selective papers sat are the same regardless of which school you intend to apply for.
The 11+ consists of:
- 2 x CEM papers supplied by the University of Durham
- 1 x English paper
The tests are marked internally.
The scores from both CEM papers are put together to give an overall average score. The CEM papers are marked externally by the University of Durham. The children will have to mark their answers on a separate answer sheet. This answer sheet is then marked electronically.
The English paper is 30 minutes long and provides the student with 1-3 writing tasks, which the student can choose from. They should aim to write at least one side of A4 in this time and demonstrate a high level of writing in that time.
All scores are rank ordered to fill the number of spaces available at each school.
For Churston:
Places will be offered to those who achieve the selective score (above the 150th place) in the CEM tests. If children tie on scores, then their writing will be considered as to whether they win the space over a child who has the same CEM score.
For the Torquay Schools:
The CEMand the writing paper scores are put together and then the children are rank ordered.
