Integration and Anti-discrimination

Purpose of the Job:To support the organisation byconductinglegal and policy research on integration of migrants and refugees and anti-discrimination

Reporting to:Isabelle Chopin and Thomas Huddleston

MPG designs and implements comparative research and projects with stakeholders on EU migration policy, refugee integration and anti-discrimination. This work largely focuses on comparisons of policies at national and local level, monitoring compliance with international/EU legal standards and analysis of the impact of policies on immigration flows and integration outcomes. The main projects in this area are the Refugee Integration Evaluation Tool (NIEM) and the upcoming research social platform on migration and asylum (ReSOMA). On anti-discrimination, MPG manages the non-discrimination strand of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination. The Network produces each year national reports assessing the transposition and implementation of the two anti-discrimination directives into national law, comparative analysis, thematic reports on specific issues and the bi-annual European equality law review. MPG is also engaged in various projects notably on equality data collection, hate speech and trainings for local organisations.

Key responsibilities

1)Coordinating international research

  • Coordinating research projects, including collaborating with partners, identifying experts, designing questionnaires, convening meetings, preparing agendas with supporting documentation as well as reporting
  • Proposing, developing and fundraising for new research projects

2)Conducting international research

  • Using and creating datasets drawing on a wide variety of sources including government, expert networks, academia, non-governmental organisations, media, desk research, etc.
  • Analysing, writing, and presenting comparative results in an accurate and accessible way in the appropriate format (publications, trainings, blogs, public speaking)

3)Working with MPG team

  • Work with other MPG staff on common projects
  • Collaborating with a wide variety of actors in the implementation of MPG’s programme
  • Other research or networking tasks as requested by the Programme Directors

Person Specification – Legal policy analyst

Essential / Desirable
Skills, knowledge, experience /
  • Masters’ degree or higher in law
  • Proven knowledge of integration policies, including EU law
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to gather, compare, and summarise complex information
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to present information and arguments in an articulate and persuasive manner in English (native speaker level)
  • Creativity and entrepreneurship to design/fundraise projects and work with different experts and stakeholders

  • Proven knowledge of anti-discrimination laws and policies, including EU law
  • German or French as second language
  • Strategic thinking for policy development / organisational change
  • Strong public speaking skills
