Department Mission:

The Foreign Language Department at Edsel Ford High School emphasizes quality and professionalism in all its programs, beginning with introductory and intermediate language courses and extending through the advanced courses in literature and culture.

The Foreign Language Department staff is committed to excellence in the areas of teaching and research of the various languages, literatures and cultures it offers following the ACTFL and the It integrates the study of foreign languages into the overall mission of the Edsel Ford High Schol and provides students with the means to access and analyze other cultures.

The vision of the Foreign Language Department at Edsel Ford is to produce students who possess a fundamental understanding of foreign languages and societies from linguistic, literary, and cultural perspectives. The Foreign Language Department is committed to teaching students to:

1. Communicate effectively in a foreign language and interact in culturally

Appropriate ways with native speakers of that language.

2.Acquire insight into the heritage, cultural values and practices

of the foreign country or countries studied.

3.Develop disposition and cognitive strategies for lifelong studying of other

languages and cultures.

  1. Course Description:

This two trimester course will focus on the Arabic spoken and written language by having students involved in discussions about different topics, sharing information, written composition skills, grammar and reading comprehension skills. The objectives are organized into three areas of communication (oral, verbal and written, and are further grouped into four communicative processes: Oral communication, visual interpretation. Reading comprehension and writing. These four objectives are skilled –based .The student’s knowledge and understanding will be developed through, learning language, learning through language and learning about language.This course will provide each and every student with learning experiences that will not only improve their academic skills but encourage lifelong learning, enhance cultural awareness, create empathetic global citizens, prepare them for Diploma Program standard program, and get them ready to lead in their communities and the world for a peaceful, successful future..

  1. Arabic Assessment Criteria:

.Your grade in this course will be based on Foreign Language Standardsand your demonstration of proficiency on those Standards through the Foreign Language Standards we have identified the most important concepts, knowledge and skills for to master in this course. Every single assignment we do in class will be directly tied to one of the Standards. All these smaller assignments (likes quizzes, homework, in-class work, short paragraph writing, etc.) are called formative assessments. The formative assignments are made to prepare you for the summative assessments. If you do poorly on the formative assessments and don’t take them seriously…guess what? You won’t do well on theSummative assessments. But if you take the formative assignments seriously, use them as feedback/advice, and learn from them, you will definitely do well on the big assessments.

Grading Scale is as follows:

A = 100 – 95

A- = 94 - 90

B+ = 89 – 85

B= 84- 80

C+ = 79 -75

C= 74 -70

C- = 69 - 65

D+= 64 - 60

D= 59-55

D- 54-40

F= 40 and below

ARABIC 1/S2 OBJECTIVES

This course will help students to develop:

  • The ability to communicate in Arabic with native speakers of Arabic on a variety of every day life topics, e.g., introducing oneself and other, describing people and things, giving and eliciting information, stating preferences, giving directions and describing locations, talking about daily activities, etc.,….
  • Ability to read authentic material on familiar topics with ease and responsible speed.
  • Ability to listen and understand authentic spoken Arabic.
  • Ability to write coherent sentences and paragraphs with accuracy.
  • Ability to recognize and understand various grammatical rules and their application in context.
  • Expanding cultural awareness through class discussion and reading material.
  • Ability to recognize and understand and various grammatical rules and their application in context ; such as :
  1. Conjugation of the Arabic verb.
  2. Forming dual nouns.
  3. Number noun agreement.
  4. Plurals and nonrational nouns.
  5. Objects of verbs.
  6. Objects of prepositions.
  7. Ordinal numbers.
  8. Cases of the noun etc…
