“Get the Egg”

Week of September 20 - 24, 2010

Lesson Essential Question:
How do I identify the main idea and details of the story?
Activating Strategy:
Do a picture walk of story (teacher’s choice) to see what the story is about. The teacher will read the story to the class. The students will discuss with their partners the main idea and details. The teacher will complete the graphic organizer from the students’ discussion.
Preview Vocabulary:
Main idea, details, mostly about, most likely

Pre-Reading:
Give students a preview of the selection:
Have children read the title of the story. Identify the nest filled with eggs in the picture. Identify the author and illustrator. Ask children what they think this selection will be about.
Introduce the vocabulary:
Bird – animal covered in feathers with wings and two legs
Nest – a bird’s home
During Reading:
Read the selection—shared (think aloud) paired or independently. Keep in mind the story graphic organizer when reading the story. After reading a couple of pages stop and check for understanding. Ask: What has happened in the story so far? What clues in the pictures help me understand the story? Ask a student to say a new sentence that means about the same thing as selected sentences that you read.
After Reading:
1.  What is main idea and detail?
2.  What tells you that this story could really happen?
3.  Where are Brad and Kin when the egg falls? How do they feel?
4.  What do Kim and Brad observe at the end of the story?
5.  Have children look back at pages 100 – 101. Ask how the characters’ feelings are different from their feelings on pages 102 – 103.
