1. Using the iPad for the first time in school
Before using the iPad in school, pupils and parents must sign and return copies of the
- Home School Agreement for iPad 1:1.
2.E-Safety
Our E-Safety policy is well established and is also applicable to iPads. The guidelines set out in the E-Safety policy should be followed. Copies of the policy are available from the school. Furthermore, as previously stated, the following document must be signed before your child receives an iPad:
- Home School Agreement for iPad 1:1
Issues of E-Safety will continue to be addressed through assemblies, e-safety lessons and other curricula activity. The staff have the right to look at the content of the iPad at any time and will undertake spot checks to ensure that they are being used responsibly. We also have a Mobile Device Management system installed at school that ensures appropriate apps are installed on the iPads and that settings are maximised to ensure safety.
The Internet filtering system that is used at school applies to all the iPads.
Please be aware that a member of staff has the right to look at the content stored on your iPad at any time and this will happen as part of random spot checks to ensure that the iPads are being used appropriately.
3. Taking Care of the iPad
Pupils are responsible for the general care of their iPad and we recommend that:
- Food and drink should be kept away from the iPad, as it may cause damage to the device.
- A clean, soft cloth should be used to clean the screen, no cleansers of any type.
- Cords and cables should be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage.
- iPads should never be left in an unattended or unsupervised area.
- The iPad should not be disassembled or attempted to be repaired.
- The iPad should be kept in a protective case at all times.
- iPad batteries must be charged and ready for school each day.
Carrying iPads
- iPads should always be kept in their protective case.
- Avoid bumping the iPad against any surfaces.
- Items carried in a bag alongside the iPad should be limited to avoid too much pressure being put onto the iPad.
- When travelling to and from school the iPad should not be taken out of the pupils bag.
Screen Care
- The iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
- Do not lean on top of the iPad when it is open or closed.
- Do not place anything near the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.
- Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth. Use of harsh chemicals will damage the screen.
4. Using the iPad
iPads are intended for use at school each day. Lessons will be disrupted if Pupils forget their iPad or have failed to charge it up. Pupils must be responsible for bringing their iPads to school each day, unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher.
Appropriate use in School:
In lessons
Some teachers will use the iPads in lessons more than others. This is likely to vary dramatically throughout the year as some lessons/topics may be more suited to the use of new technology than others.
Pupils:
Your use of the iPad in school is always at the teacher’s discretion when not in use they should be placed face down on the desk. If the teacher hasn’t asked you to use the iPad then it should not be used. If the teacher feels that you have not been using the iPad responsibly then they will ask you to put it away and issue a suitable sanction.
Break/Lunchtimes
During lunch/break times the pupils will leave their iPads in their classrooms.
Pupils:
The iPad should not be used at break or lunchtime. The only time it is acceptable is in the event of wet play/lunchtimes for educational activities, under supervision.
Backing up Work
We will be using Google Apps for Education and Showbie App to back up work.
iPad Left at Home
If pupils leave their iPad at home, they will use other means, if necessary, to complete their school work.
Charging the iPads Battery
iPads must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Pupils need to charge their iPad each evening. The iPad should only be charged with the provided charger.
Screensavers and Backgrounds
Pupils should choose a suitable picture for their background.
Home Internet Access
The iPad will link to your home wireless network - guidance will be issued by school if you need support to do this. This will assist pupils with iPad use while at home.
Note to parents about home use:
Parents are ultimately responsible for overseeing the use of their child’s iPad at home. Each family has unique dynamics and it is our intention to respect parenting decisions with regard to the use of the device. However, we recommend that:
- The iPad should be used in an open area where you can monitor what your child is doing.
- You ask your child to show and explain to you how they are using it for learning.
- You keep the iPad out of the bedroom when your child is going to bed.
- You could turn off the wireless router at certain times each night to restrict access.
- You ensure that you check the iPad regularly to ensure that any apps that are downloaded are suitable, as even some apps with the age restriction of 4+ can be unsuitable, e.g. ‘TANGO app’.
5. Pupil activities that are not allowed
- The sending, accessing, uploading or downloading inappropriate materials/apps.
- Pupils are not allowed to give out any personal information, for any reason, over the internet.
- Pupils are not allowed to use messaging while at School
6.Apps On The iPad
The school has a recommended app list for pupils to download onto their iPads.
During the academic year staff and students will utilise additional apps that may be added to iPads.
All pupils will need to create an Apple ID using a personal email address.
The Apple ID allows the pupil to add and update apps as needed and it also allows the iPad administrators to add any new apps.
The software/apps installed by Birchfield School must remain on the iPad. From time to time the school will add applications to the pupils iPads using a Mobile Device Management System (MDM).
Additional Apps
When purchasing paid apps using pupil Apple IDs then parents should use an iTunes voucher and not put in any credit/debit card details.
If parents are using their own Apple ID to pay for any apps then they must sign out of this Apple ID before pupils bring their iPad into school.
NB, Do not put any credit/debit card details into the pupil’s Apple ID.
App updates
Updated versions of apps are available from time to time. Pupils will be required to check their iPads for ‘updates’ and update as required.
7.Appropriate Use In School
The iPad should always be used appropriately during school.
If a teacher feels that a child is not using it responsibly they may request the pupil to put it away or remove it for the remainder of the lesson.
Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas.
8. Protecting and Storing the iPad
iPad Identification
Each iPad should be labeled with the pupil’s name.
Storing your iPad
Pupils will take their iPads home every day after school. iPads should not be stored in vehicles. Do not leave the iPad in a place that is experiencing extreme hot or cold conditions. Extreme heat will damage the iPad and extreme cold will cause severe screen damage.
Unsupervised iPads
Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas.
9. Personal Safety
The likelihood of being approached outside school by someone trying to steal the iPad is slim, but it is important that all students act safely to limit this risk.
Pupils:
- Ensure that the iPads is kept in your bag on the way to and from school.
- f you are approached, just hand the iPad over. It is insured and your work will be saved to you Google apps account or Showbie.

- Be aware of posture when using the iPad, especially for long periods of time.
- When at home, regular breaks should be taken if using the iPad for long periods of time.
12. Loss/Damage of the iPad
- The MDM (Mobile Device Management) system allows administrators to wipe iPads remotely, therefore they cannot be re-used by a third party following theft.
- All iPads should be insured.
