Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway (RHS members free)

Exbury Gardens were the inspiration of Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, who created one of the finest woodland gardens in the country. He was a keen collector of plants, particularly rhododendrons and azaleas.

Railway enthusiasts can enjoy a day with a difference at Exbury, where a superb 12 ¼” railway runs along a 1¼ mile track through the gorgeous gardens. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing 20 min journey as the train passes through the specially designed ‘Summer Lane’ Garden, now reaching maturity with huge swathes of colourful perennials, flowering grasses, a pool and maturing trees. The railway skirts the top of the Rock Garden, where passengers are given a bird’s eye view of the largest man-made Rock Garden in Europe. Passengers regularly see pheasants from the train, and the occasional glimpses of deer, herons and kingfishers.

After their railway journey, passengers are encouraged to explore Exbury’s roomy Engine Shed, where graphics, videos and memorabilia line the walls recalling steam’s heyday and the construction of the railway.

Uppark House and Garden (NT members free)

Perched on its vantage point high on the South Downs ridge, Uppark commands views as far south as the English Channel. Outside the intimate gardens are being gradually restored to their original 18th Century design. Uppark’s Georgian interiors illustrate the comfort of life “upstairs”, in contrast with the “downstairs” world of the servants. A highlight of the collection is one of the best examples of a 17th Century doll’s house in the country.
