Entrance Antiphon

Turn your eyes, O God, our shield; and look on the face of your anointed one; one day within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 40

Lord, make haste to help me!

I waited, I waited for the Lord,
and he stooped down to me;
he heard my cry,

He drew me from the deadly pit,
from the miry clay.

He set my feet upon a rock,
made my footsteps firm.

He put a new song into my mouth,
praise of our God.

Many shall see and fear
and shall trust in the Lord.

Wretched and poor though I am
the Lord is mindful of me.

You are my rescuer, my help;
O my God, do not delay.

Lord, make haste to help me!

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia!

Communion Antiphon

With the Lord there is mercy; in him is plentiful redemption.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C
18th August, 2013 Anthony Cassidy, C.Ss.R
Commentary
First Reading (Jer 38:4-6.8-10).
Jeremiah was the prophet at the time of the siege of Jerusalem by the army of Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar. He saw that the situation of the city was hopeless. The Judean king, Zedekiah, a weak ruler, was controlled by his advisers, who warned him that Jeremiah was undermining the morale of the defending troops and the ordinary inhabitants of the city. The person of the prophet was sacred, however. He was God’s representative and there was great popular support for him. They could not then do away with him openly, but they could ensure that the word of the Lord proclaimed could not be heard, and so render it powerless. The ineffectual Zedekiah recognises just how powerless he is and surrenders power over the prophet without much struggle. They had him lowered into a well, in the hope that his word would not be heard, and that he would die a natural death. But the Lord had other ideas. Ebed-Melech (Hebrew: ‘Servant of the King’) is on Jeremiah’s side and is the sole voice for compassion and justice raised on behalf of the unfortunate prophet. Ebed-Melech is a foreigner, an Ethiopian, in the royal service and it is to him that the prophet owes his life.
Second Reading (Heb 12:1-4).
‘The great cloud of witnesses’ includes Abraham, who had enough trust in God that he was prepared to sacrifice Isaac, his only hope for the future of his race and name, and Moses, who shared in the suffering and trials of his people during the exodus, even to the extent of not entering the promised land. The writer encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and his story, rather like the ploughman who keeps his eye focussed on a fixed point on the horizon, so that he can plough a straight and undeviating furrow, in order that we may arrive at the point at which Jesus is awaiting us. Jesus too was a person of faith who kept his eyes fixed on the joy of the resurrection which still lay in the future. In the strength of that faith, he was able to endure his sufferings. Thinking of how he stood firm in the face of opposition can give believers the strength they need. Writing in a climate where martyrdom was an ever-present possibility, the writer of Hebrews warns his readers that in the struggle against sin they have not yet had to face the prospect of fighting until death.
Gospel (Lk 12:49-53)..
The two sayings about the fire and the baptism Jesus must still face are difficult. It is easy to identify their common structure – a reference to something pertaining to the mission of Jesus (‘cast fire on the earth’ / ‘baptism with which I must be baptised’) and a declaration of impatience for the moment of fulfilment to come about (‘how I wish it were blazing’ / ‘how great is my distress until it is over’). The fire may refer to the coming judgment of the Son of Man and the baptism to the sufferings he will undergo in Jerusalem.
