Famous People:

Greece is a mythical place that was founded by the Mycenaean's and later conquered by the Dorian's and the Ionians. From these people came the great city state of Sparta and Athens. Some famous people who lived in Greece are:

Pericles: The legendary statesmen who helped extort the Delian League. Pericles also helped finance the construction of the Parthenon and rebuild the Athenian Navy (Ellis).

Herodotus: The man from Halecarnosos. Wrote the first History book called the Histories. This book recounts the events leading up to and including The Persian war (Ellis).

Hippocrates: The Athenian who created the oath all doctors take to help their patients no matter what the cost. He also helped discover the causes of various illness across Greece (Greece.com).

Homer : Author of the Iliad and the Oddyssey. He is the one who recounts the Trojan War, to which we are inspired to fight today (Ellis).

The Parthenon

The most beautiful building in all of Greece. It was commissioned by Pericles and built by Phidias. It stands at the top of the Acropolis and is dedicated to the Goddess Athena the protector of our city. Athena is also the Goddesses whom the city is named after (Enchantedlearning.com).

Omphalos Stone

Located at the base of Mount Parnansous. This stone is the stone swallowed by Cronos, thinking it was Zeus. Cronos later spat it out when Zeus attacked him. Zeus placed this stone on earth in order to marvel the mortals and prove the Gods existence. Omphalos Stone is currently located next to the Temple of Appollo in Delphi (Myhogora).

Marathon

Home of the decisive victory against the first Persian invasion in 490 B.C.E. Admire this awesome battlefield where General Miltiades met he Persian Empire head on. After the conflict General Miltiades realized the Persians where retreating to Athens, he then ordered Pheidippides to run 26 miles to warn the Athenians (Pericles).

Thermopylae

Come and see the site where King Leonides and his 300 Spartans stood their ground against the mighty Persian army for three days. Experience the harsh surroundings and observe the stone that says, "Here Spartan men lye true to their laws." Walk the route of Xereses men behind the Spartan camp, to give the final blow (Herodotus).
