A RESOLUTION honoring the 50th anniversary of the Kentucky Commission on Women.
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Commission on Women is dedicated to elevating the status of women and girls in this Commonwealth, empowering them to overcome barriers to equality, and expanding opportunities to achieve their fullest potential; and
WHEREAS, in April 1964, Governor Edward T. Breathitt established a state commission to study and report on the status of women. In 2014 the Kentucky Commission on Women celebrates 50 years since that call, and in that time this Commonwealth has grown in both its opportunities for women and in the equal treatment women receive under the law; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, the Kentucky Commission on Women started a campaign to recognize women that history had overlooked. The exhibit, which included portraits of these historical figures, were showcased at an exhibit at the Kentucky State Fair. In 1996, the exhibit was moved to the first floor of the Capitol building; and
WHEREAS, Kentucky Women Remembered now includes over 60 watercolor portraits of famous women who have impacted the citizens of this Commonwealth. Immortalized in these portraits are such notable women as Georgia Davis Powers, who served for 21 years in the Kentucky State Senate and was the first person of color and the first woman to be elected to that body; Thelma Stovall, former Kentucky State Representative, Kentucky State Treasurer, Kentucky Secretary of State, and Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky who fought for equal rights for women; and Martha Layne Collins, the 56th Governor of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, on March 18, 2014, the Kentucky Commission on Women celebrated its 50th anniversary with the announcement that it has received a $100,000 grant from Toyota to complete the production of a documentary based on the contributions women have made to the development of this Commonwealth. The commission also unveiled a new Kentucky Women Remembered portrait. The honoree was Marie Caldwell Humphries, who served as the first chairwoman of the commission after it became an agency of general government in the late 1960s; and
WHEREAS, this honorable body commends the good work the Kentucky Commission on Women has done for a half-century, congratulates all those involved with the commission upon this 50th anniversary celebration, and acknowledges the historical importance of the Kentucky Women Remembered project and its vital place in the lives of future generations of Kentucky women;
