Tuesday: 1/24/17

  1. AoW#3 – Read and complete the assignment as directed.
  2. Poetry Booklet Project – Continue working on this project. Complete the limerickand diamond poem. Follow the directions given in the “Poetry Booklet Project” for each of these poems. This project is due on 2/7/17so that you may have an extra week to add finishing touches to it. Rough drafts of the poems are due on 1/31 with your portfolio (11 points on the Parent Portfolio Evaluation sheet). The booklet should be presented with a decorated cover and the overall presentation of it should be neat and colorful. Follow the directions in the packet. Work on this project every day this week!

  • Check work for completion.

Wednesday: 1/25/17

  1. Read the “Hopes and Dream,” poetry selections from the poetry list. Make sure to complete the Poetry Review ½ sheet for each poem.
  2. Journal – Complete ONE journal entry for the “Hopes and Dreams” group of poetry read this week. The journal should address the theme of the poems and how this theme is expressed in the different poetry selections.
  3. Vocabulary – Complete the “Poetic Devices” list with definitions. Continue to study the poetic devices. Use your textbook and hand-outs to help you do this.
  4. Poetry Analysis (Study) Assignment – (Oral Presentation) See the hand-out for all details. The point of this assignment is to “teach” the class a poem of your choice (one that is appropriate and that we have not been assigned). Make sure that the poem is written on a large paper for the class to see.
  5. Poetry Booklet Project – Work on this project!

Parent Expectations:
  • Check work for completion.
  • Please review your student’s poetry selection for the Poetry Analysis assignment (oral presentation). The students will be delivering their presentations to their table groups.

Thursday: 1/26/17

  1. Read the “Miscellaneous,” poetry selections from the poetry list. Make sure to complete the Poetry Review ½ sheet for each poem.
  2. Journal – Complete ONE journal entry for the “Miscellaneous” group of poems read this week. The journal should address the theme of the poems and how this theme is expressed in the different poetry selections.
  3. Poetic Devices and other worksheets – Continue to work on this sheet we started in class by filling in with examples. Make sure to complete and study all other worksheets relating to figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, etc.)
  4. Grammar –Continue working on Rule #10.
  5. Poetry Booklet – Work on this project!

Parent Expectations:
  • Check work for completion.
  • Check for completion of grammar and sign student off on the Grammar Log if ready.

Friday: 1/27/17

  1. Read the “Love” poetry selections from the poetry list. Make sure to complete the Poetry Review ½ sheet for each poem.
  2. Journal – Complete ONE journal entry for the “Love” group of poems read this week. The journal should address the theme of the poems and how this theme is expressed in the different poetry selections.
  3. Poetry Analysis (Study) Assignment – (Oral Presentation) See the hand-out for all details. Make sure that the poem is written on a large paper for the class to see.

  • Parent Portfolio Evaluation – Review your student’s portfolio. Please make sure you complete and sign this sheet that’s due on Tuesday with the portfolio. Please contact me with any questions!

Monday: 1/30/17

  1. Poetry Booklet Project – Continue working on this project. Complete the limerick and diamond poem. Follow the directions given in the “Poetry Booklet Project” for each of these poems.   2. Poetic devices (multiple choice definitions)
  3. Identification of poetic elements used in poems
  4. Poetry analysis – you will read a poem and complete a short analysis of it
  5. Poetry Analysis (Study) Assignment – (Oral Presentation) See the hand-out for all details. The point of this assignment is to “teach” the class a poem of your choice (one that is appropriate and that we have not been assigned). Make sure that the poem is written on a large paper for the class to see. You will present tomorrow.

  • Parent Portfolio Evaluation sheet – Please review portfolio and complete and sign this sheet.

Additional Comments:

Portfolio is due on 1/31/17!

  • Poetry Booklet final due date is on 2/7/17. Rough drafts of each poem need to be turned in with the portfolio on 1/31/17.
  • Remember, if you come to class unprepared (portfolio not graded & signed by parent) you will not receive a test gradeuntil your portfolio is turned in. Also, you will be subject to a 10% late penalty on work starting on Thursday and 20% deducted every school week until it is turned in!
