Speedy Danny Vitti scored twice and Tom Wood once as New Canaan, coached by former Central High and Georgetown standout Joe Sikorski, ended Warde's 14-game unbeaten streak 22-8. Larry Gill had a short TD carry in defeat. ... Tempers flared at several intervals in Harding's 33-6 win over Bassick as stellar halfback Billy Smith returned to action after missing two games due to an injury with two touchdowns. Dennis Flynn scored first on a three-yard run. Gus Moran ran it in from the six for the Lions. ... Fairfield Prep remained undefeated with a 20-6 victory over Notre Dame-West Haven with linebacker Donald Moran leading the defense and Frank Grywalski catching two TD passes from Ed McCarthy. ... John Alesevich had three TDs on runs of six, seven and 86 yards and Gene Hester added a 57-yard run and an 85-yard punt return as Bunnell beat Stratford for the second time this season 28-14.

Fullback/LB Donald Moran and Jerry Niedermier scored on short runs as Fairfield Prep defeated Notre Dame-Bridgeport 14-6 in the much anticipated showdown between the two rivals before 4,500 at a packed ND field. Prep dominated with 22 first downs and 217 total yards compared to two first downs and 11 yards for the Lancers, who scored on Al Turko's 28-yard interception return. ... Larry Gill was outstanding, passing for two TDs to Don Messer and running for two more in leading Warde over Harding 31-14. Dennis McGovern had both TDs for the Presidents. ... Central edged Bunnell 8-6 as Pat Arvonino ran it in from seven yards out and added the two-point conversion. Al Powell scored for Bunnell. ... Ron Cloutier (one, nine, 22 and 44) caught four TD passes from Hal Gorman in Milford's 48-8 win over Bullard-Havens.

Coach Joe Brosley's Fairfield Prep team improved its chances of a state football championship by handing defending state champion Stamford a 35-0 loss before 11,000 at Boyle Stadium as QB Ed McCarthy passed for two TDs and Donald Moran scored twice, raising his point total to 102. Ron Miazga, Win McLaughlin, Frank Grywalski, Don Lynch, Marty Tristine and Gene Skowronski led a defensive unit that was able to shut down Stamford's potent running attack. ... Harding set back Central 16-6 as Billy Smith scored on a 41-yard pass from George Kasper and Dennis McGovern added a three-yard run. The Hilltoppers got a four-yard run by John Parelli. ... Ziggy Zegarski (21) and Al Turko (51) scored on passes from Rich Soares for Notre Dame in a 12-all tie against Stamford Catholic. Ted Cappola had a 41-yard run and Joe Fiordelisi a three-yarder for the Crusaders. ... Bunnell used a combined six touchdowns from Al Kraynak, Andy Tomasko and Ray Bukovchik in beating Bunnell 48-0. ...
