1.LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS, BURSARIES AND AWARDS
These awards are generally presented during the Graduation Ceremonies at the end of the year to members of the Grade 12 class.
The scholarships, bursaries and awards available at L.V.RogersSecondary School are described in the following pages of this booklet. The financial recognition of student achievement and the support for students continuing on to post secondary education is thanks to local individuals, businesses and organizations.
HOW TO APPLY
Application and consideration for the following awards can be done by simply going to and CLICK HERE in order to complete application by Friday, April 13th2012.
ANGELO MASTROBUONO BURSARY
Criteria: Consideration will be based upon financial need.
History: In memory of Angelo Mastrobuono, a City of Nelson employee, killed accidentally on the job. Angelo will be remembered for his great work ethic and his dedication to learning.
BARRY CRISPIN MEMORIAL - SPONSORED BY H & R BLOCK
Criteria: Students pursuing their education in the field of business.
History: In memory of Barry Crispin, a former student of L.V. Rogers.
BRIAN McGRATH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY
Criteria: Consideration will be given based on financial need.
History: In memory of Brian McGrath, a former teacher at L.V. Rogers.
CAITLYND PIDERMAN BURSARY
History: Caitlynd was a 2006 LVR graduate who loved Basketball.
Criteria: Student is trying to overcome health challenges, or student must be an athlete that shows superior determination, effort & commitment to sport.
CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN
Criteria: Top female student. A need for financial assistance may be considered.
COLUMBIA POWER CORPORATION BURSARY
History: Established in 1999 by ColumbiaBasin Power Projects.
FORTIS BC
Criteria: Student must be entering post-secondary program in areas related to Electrician, Millwright, Powerline Technology, Electrical Engineering etc.
GENERO/DAVIS - ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR
Criteria: Preference given to candidate having a relative in Eastern Star or the Masonic Order.
History: Sponsored by RoseCity Chapter #28.
GYRO CLUB OF NELSON
Criteria: Strong academics.
HORIE FAMILY BURSARY
Criteria: Student is proceeding with post-secondary education in media/visual arts and has a demonstrated financial need.
HUESTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Student has a strong interest in sports, music or art and they reflect determination and humility. Financial need is also significant.
History: Established in 1986 in memory of Bob Huestis Jr. He is remembered as a unique individual with a wide range of interests including sports, art and music.
ITALIAN CANADIAN SOCIETY
Criteria: Preference to member of Italian Club.
I.O.D.E. SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES
Criteria: Strong academics, music students, financial need.
KIWANIS CLUB OF NELSON
Criteria: Preference given to member. Student who excels at academics and displays good community spirit and involvement.
History: In memory of Stan Livingstone who was a Charter Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Nelson. Stan was also secretary of the Nelson School Board, (and the Livingstone scholarship became an annual award of the Nelson Kiwanis Club in his memory.)
KOOTENAY ASSOCIATION for SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (KAST)
Criteria: Student has interest in pursuing a career in science or any area involving technology.
KOOTENAY LAKE HOSPITAL AUXILIARY NELSON CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Student intends to pursue post-secondary education in the field of Health Care.
KOOTENAYLAKE DENTAL CLINIC
Criteria: Interest in education or dental career. Academic or science background.
KOOTENAY LAKEPRINCIPALS’ & VICE-PRINCIPALS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: A minimum grade point average of 3.2 over your best seven courses.

Criteria: Academics and Service.

Criteria: One male and one female scholarship awarded.

Criteria: High academic achievement. Furthering education in the field of medicine, including veterinary medicine. Preference may be given to a student with evidence of financial need.

Criteria: An active member of the Grad Committee who has made a substantial contribution.
MOUNTAIN WEST STUDIOS
Criteria: Involvement in Yearbook, LVTV or graphic design.

Criteria: Student pursuing Business Administration or related field.
NELSON HIGH SCHOOL REUNION 1944-48
Criteria: Pursuing further education.
History: Established in 1991 by the reunion committee.
NELSON DISTRICT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Preference given to one or more deserving candidates proceeding to technology, university, college, or vocational training.
NELSON MASONIC LODGE
Criteria: One male and one female based on citizenship, group/club activities, fine arts involvement, C+ average.
NELSON MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Student has been involved in Nelson Minor Hockey in their grade 12 year as a player, referee or coach
NELSON PILOTS’ ASSOCIATION
Criteria: Pursuing a career in the aviation industry (air crew, aeronautical engineer, aircraft maintenance).
NELSON ROAD KINGS SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: For students whose post secondary plans are related to the automotive field. This may include mechanics, body repair and sales as well as welding, electrical & millwright/machinist.
ORMOND FAMILY BURSARY
Criteria: High degree of excellence in Fine Arts with first consideration to a Theatre Arts student.
PHARMASAVE SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: A student that is interested in Sciences and has demonstrated community service.
RANDY PEREPOLKIN BURSARY
Criteria: Must be going into a Music Program with preference given to a guitar or voice student.
ROULSTON COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Criteria: To a deserving student who has been involved in community service activities.
SCHOOL DISTRICT #8 AB. ED. AWARD
Criteria: To a deserving student that has been actively involved in the Aboriginal Education Program
STROMSTEAD SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Furthering his/her education in a science or mathematics related field.
Demonstrated interest and knowledge in the area of information technology.
History: Established in 1997 by E&G Stromstead for LVR students furthering their studies.
T.A.S.K. BURSARY
Criteria: This achievement award is for students with special needs.
T.A.S.K. SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Students pursuing their education in a field relating to working with children with special needs.
KENNY, DENNIS, MICHAELZEABIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Applicants who are furthering their education in language study.
History: Kenneth Zeabin believed in equality and that “life must go on”. He enjoyed life to the fullest and fought bravely his battle against muscular dystrophy.

A.I.COLLINSON SPIRIT AWARD
Criteria: Must have been a student at A. I. Collinson Elementary School.
ALLEN SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Male. Priority given to students intending to enter the Ministry of the United Church, students intending to enter the Ministry of another Protestant denomination. May be given to one or more (but not more than 3) students.
BRAGAGNOLO BURSARY
Criteria: Applicant must have attended BlewettSchool for a minimum of one school year (excluding Kindergarten).
History: Established by the BlewettSchool community in 1980 as a tribute to Mr. Bragagnolo,
who was the Principal at Blewett from 1966 to 1980.
CAITLYND PIDERMAN COMMITMENT TO SPORT BURSARY
History: Caitlynd was a 2006 LVR graduate who loved Basketball.
Criteria: Student must be an athlete that shows superior determination, effort & commitment to sport.
JOHN CARTER & BILL BING MEMORIAL BURSARY
Criteria: Proceeding with post-secondary education in the fields of natural history, environmental studies or parks management.
History: Carter and Bing were two avid outdoorsmen with respect for and appreciation of the wilderness. In 1996, both men gave their lives in the pursuit of safety for others. John by an avalanche while patrolling ski runs and Bill by a plane crash while searching for a downed plane.
COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST
Criteria: Service and leadership to the community and strong academics.
COWAN OFFICE SUPPLY
Criteria: Open to students interested in pursuing business as a career. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate leadership, entrepreneurship and/or technical skills.
CUPE LOCAL 748
Criteria: Son or daughter of a member of CUPE 748. C+ average during final year. Attendance and punctuality, school participation and community involvement are considered.
History: Established in 1995 for deserving students who are sons or daughters of CUPE local 748 members and who are graduating from a high school within School District #8.
DAVID THOMPSON ART AWARD
Criteria: preference given to a student pursuing post-secondary studies in Fine Arts. Financial aid is also a consideration.
DELANE H. REED/EAGLES CLUB
Criteria: One male and one female furthering their education in non-academic studies, (i.e. trade school, business administration etc.)
History: In memory of Delane H. Reed, a Past President and long time active member of Nelson Lodge #22.
ERNIE GARE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Athletic, academic and leadership qualities both in the school and in the community.
History: In memory of Ernie Gare, a sports enthusiast and coach who was very active in the Nelson Community.
FRASER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: To worthy students who plan to continue their post-secondary education to include college, university, trade, vocational or artistic training and private music lessons.
History: Established in 1991 by Jim Fraser, a teacher at NelsonHigh School in the name of his wife Margaret and himself.
GEORGIA ETHEL MCKEOWN BURSARY
Criteria: Awarded to a student with a high academic standing who plans to continue their post secondary education with consideration given to financial need.
History: Georgia Ethel McKeown a long time teacher in the Nelson area.
GET HIGH ON NATURE SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Pursuing post secondary education in an area related to environmental studies and has a solid record of environmental activities.
GUILFORD BRETT MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Must be involved in Music.
History: Established in memory of Amy Ferguson and the United Church Boys Choir.
KOOTENAY SAVINGS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Criteria: Must be a member of Kootenay Savings Credit Union.
NDCU-ALLARD INSURANCE COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD
Criteria: preference will be to a member in good standing of the Credit Union or Allard Insurance. For students that show demonstrated involvement in Community activities.
NELSON & DISTRICT CREDIT UNION ASPIRE – STUDENT ACHEIVEMENT AWARD
Criteria: preference will be to a member in good standing of the Credit Union or
Insurance subsidiary, Allard Insurance. For academic excellence.
NELSON & DISTRICT CREDIT UNION STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
Criteria: preference will be to a member in good standing of the Credit Union or Allard insurance. For students that have demonstrated strong leadership abilities.
NELSON DISTRICT TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION MEMBER’S SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Child or grandchild of an active or retired N.D.T.A. member. Intended for university, college or trade schools.
NELSON REGIONAL SPORTS COUNCIL
Criteria: For students who have been involved in either School or Community Sports.
NELSONWALDORFSCHOOL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Must have attended the NelsonWaldorfSchool for a minimum of 2 years.
R.H.C. INSURANCE BROKERS SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Available to any student that plans to attend any type of Post Secondary institution.
ROTARY CLUB OF NELSON
Criteria: Strong academics. Good school record in a variety of subjects as well as evidence of leadership and service, also involvement in the arts and community service.
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION
Criteria: Students furthering their education at SelkirkCollege. Preference given to relative of Legion member. Evidence of working to potential. Evidence of financial need.
ST.JOSEPHSCHOOL BURSARY FUND
Criteria: Applicants must have attended St. JosephSchool, excluding kindergarten.
TED HARGREAVES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Preference given to a player of the West Kootenay Wildcats or local Nelson Leaf hockey team.
U.S.C.C. YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Good academic standing and have actively participated in U.S.C.C. events or progress.
YELLOWHEAD ROAD AND BRIDGE (KOOTENAY) LTD. SCHOLARSHIP
Criteria: Strong academics and evidence of leadership and service to school or community.

3 GRADUATION PROGRAM EXAMINATIONS SCHOLARSHIP
The Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship rewards graduating students for academic excellence on their Grade 10, 11 and 12 Government Exams. The Ministry of Education will grant a $1000 scholarship. If you qualify, a voucher will be sent to you by August or September.
To be eligible for a Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship, a student:
-must have at least of B (73%) in your Language Arts 12 Course (combined mark)
-a minimum of an A and three B’s on four of your best Government Exams-this can include English 12.
You can check your Government Exam results at click the student secure web icon and log on.Examination rewrite rules have been relaxed for one year to allow you to rewrite a required exam to improve your score. See your counsellor if you would like to rewrite an exam in June.
4.DOGWOOD - DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Dogwood District Awards Program rewards students for excellence in the areas of Fine Arts, Second Languages, Applied Skills, or Physical Activity (art, band, textiles, foods, mechanics, technology, P.E., media arts, French, Spanish etc.) and that plan to pursue study in that general field.
It requires a presentation to a panel where the student displays and discusses their superior achievement in the aforementioned areas. The presentations will take place at LVR on Wednesday, May 16th 2012. You will be notified of the time and place if you are short-listed. If you win, a cheque for $500 will be mailed to you in October and a voucher for $500 will be sent in November.

A student can now receive both a Dogwood – District Award and a Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship.
5.POST SECONDARY ENTRANCE AWARDS
AllPost Secondary Institutions offer entrance scholarships and bursaries. In order to qualify for an entrance scholarship from a post secondary institution you must have applied and plan on attending that post secondary institution in the fall. Students need to check University/College viewbooks and web sites for details. Applicants should make sure that they follow all instructions very carefully and meet deadlines.
6.AFFILIATION SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES
Affiliation awards specify certain requirements, such as membership in an organization, affiliation with a union, specific firm or industry.
A scholarship is based on academic achievement; a bursary is awarded based on financial need.
All applications on the Database handout can be obtained from the counselling office. Please check the criteria very carefully.
(Check at worksites to see if they offer scholarships - ie: Walmart, Safeway, etc.)
7.PASSPORT TO EDUCATION
Passport awards are given to top students. Schools determine which students will receive those awards following Ministry of Education protocols. These awards have the following values for students graduating in 2012:
Grade 10$250
Grade 11$250
Grade 12$500
Students may redeem those credits within 5 years from the expected date of graduation, at any post secondary institution approved for Canada Student loans by the Ministry of Education.
Students who have received passport stamps may pick them up at the main office after graduation, usually near the end of August.
