Spring 2003 Gas-Lift Workshop
Workshop Evaluations
Feb. 4 - 5, 2003
No. / Name (Optional) / What did you like about the workshop? / What could have been improved? / Possible future discussion or break-out topics? / Other comments.1 / Brian Dupuis / Nice overall forum. Excellent setting. Stayed pretty close to schedule. Food and hotel accommodations were excellent. / Mail or e-mail more about what each presenter is to cover. Abstract perhaps. (Editor: Abstracts were all posted in advance on the web site.) / Continue to offer pre-workshop courses for new personnel in gas-lift. Allow for two days to help to go through more examples and calculations.
2 / Keith Fangmeier / Many excellent papers. Facility and location. / Everything was well done and well organized. Copies of the papers help with note taking because some slides cannot be read. Perhaps suggest guidelines on slides - font? No way people in rear can read slides. / Subsea, stability with gas-lift and stability with long flowlines. SCADA topics great. / Meal Monday great. Tuesday lunch average. Breaks: coffee, drinks, snacks excellent!
3 / Tim Griffin / The Subsea and Deepwater gas-lift was very interesting. I found the land gas well gas-lifting paper by Boots Rouen to be most beneficial to me in that I am in natural gas storage/production industry, but found oil well gas-lifting to be interesting as well. / I think that the session yesterday (Feb. 4) should be trimmed down (maybe move some to Feb. 5th session). The Tuesday seminar seemed to run a bit long and the papers at the end of the day seemed to lose some of the participation and attention. / Land gas wells: Breakout topic on gas-lifting gas wells (brine). Possibly touch on intermittent flow gas-lifting of gas wells during this session. / This is my first professional seminar of this type (being a new engineer of four months). The session was very well run and very professional. The hotel was very adequate, meals were excellent, transportation very convenient.
4 / Jim Hall / The location was good and worthy of return. The keynote speaker was good content and quality. The pre-workshop schools are a great addition and will stimulate attendance by a new group of participants. /
- I thought that the Tuesday afternoon presentation by Janvier Lissanon was unnecessarily commercial.
- It took a while to regulate the temperature.
- I ran short on time to visit the exhibits - My fault? Or not enough time built into the program? Perhaps an afternoon rotation through the exhibits?
- Gas-lift system and component reliability: mandrels, valves, seal materials.
- Gas-lift in high angle wellbores: well intervention and valve work, benefit or detriment of high-angle gas-lift studies, high angle field case examples.
- Regulatory issues surrounding gas-lift - MMS, Coast Guard, State, BLM, etc.
5 / This workshop has grown dramatically. It's good to see high level of participation from Operators and Service Companies. There was a lot of good sharing of success in applying gas-lift. / Location of the meeting (easier access), time of the meeting (long days). /
- More in-depth on gas-lift monitoring, surveillance, automation, and control.
- Breakout sessions: Can we incorporate these sessions into the regular daily meetings rather than in the evening?
6 / Eduardo Colina /
- The different points of view and experiences with "actual" field cases and methods utilized in different parts of the world.
- How the Operators manage their resources and what do Service Companies have to offer to contribute.
- Excellent pre-workshop sessions.
7 / Michael Stein /
- Range of topics.
- Size of group made it easy to get good questions afterwards.
- Just enough exhibitors to see everything.
8 / Able to mix and talk gas-lift with gas-lift people. Seems gas-lift at most companies is a specialized discipline and therefore not many that appreciate or understand gas-lift or its contributions. / Good mix of Operators/Service Companies. Would like to see more Operators. (Editor: There was almost an equal number of Operators and Service Company personal - about 42 each.) / Hotel average and adequate.
9 / Benny Troelsen / Good presentations, breakout sessions, etc. / Day one was very long while day two was short. / Reverse flow valve safety issues. / It is very much a US event. I was particular missing Norway and the Middle East. One problem may be that ASME is not very well known outside the US. (Editor: Ten countries were represented. And, there will be an overseas gas-lift workshop this fall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to reach more international staff.)
10 / Mark Johnson /
- Excellent papers with real examples.
- Conversations with Operators, Service Companies, and Consultants, who are gas-lift industry experts.
- Web site with API documents and presentations.
- Continuing education - in future believe our company can better utilize this as a training tool.
11 / Field studies were good, especially some of the less exotic applications (e.g. Cotton Valley, Indonesia). / Run a little shorter first day, longer second day. / Quantified success of gas-lift automation. / Facilities were good. Food was good.
12 / Good range of topics covered. / Could cut back a little on presentations and spend a little more time on roundtable discussions and breakout sessions. / Intermittent gas-lift. / Hotel and meals ere very good.
13 / Good exchange of information. /
- Providing presentations beforehand to organizing committee so electronic copies could be make available to attendees in a more convenient, timely fashion.
- Multiple microphones at front and back, so people can hear better.
14 / The papers/presentations were better than last year. Overall, a better workshop than last year. Good networking opportunity. / The workshop day was a little long. Most participants have other responsibilities that need to be fulfilled during the day. Breakout sessions could have been more productive if done during the day (maybe during lunch). / Plunger lift should be included as part of this workshop. Might increase participation and it is quite similar to what was presented on several papers. / Food, coffer, etc. was excellent.
15 / Great variety of papers. Really liked the Operator papers with actual field data. / Two and one half hour session AM (between break and lunch) too long. Lunch at 12:30 too late. Should be at 11:30. / Good location. Like hotel facilities. Need Starbucks!
16 / Dean Gordon /
- 50% of presentations.
- Gathering of experienced gas-lift people.
- Discussion (keynote lunch and John Martinez) on where the industry needs to go.
- Proactive solutions to problems.
- Technical quality of some presentations.
- Need to entice more speakers. Enough were sitting in the audience! (Lots of experience.)
- Limit two presentations per topic (i.e. duals) etc.
- First morning had four in a row - blah, blah, blah.
- Unloading - high rate, low rate, surface, downhole.
- Troubleshooting - there is a lot to learn from a lot of people that sit quietly in the room.
- Compression issues.
- Evaluation - flow correlation update, studies, experiences.
- Hotel fine - average.
- Meals were above average for mass feedings.
17 / David Lee /
- The venue was extremely good - layout and facilities best so far.
- Time keeping was very good.
- Displays and networking opportunities well laid out.
- Bit more of an exchange on best practices from participants.
- Less commercial content in some presentations.
- Hotel was more than acceptable, meals were good, timing was.
- On the whole, the workshop is getting better and better each time I attend.
- For future workshops in other parts of the world, and with "new" gas-lift people coming in, presenters should remember that some nomenclature and terms may not be "familiar" to people coming into the gas-lift field.
18 / Alasdair Brown /
- Increased focus on system optimization.
- Networking with gas-lift community - cross fertilization.
- Removal/ban on blatantly commercial sales pitches such as by Schlumberger on PIPESIM.
- More case studies, less technology sales pitches.
19 / Organization, punctuality, and quality of the presentations. / Compared with the 2002 gas-lift workshop, I think this 2003 workshop has not improved. /
- More topics involving gas-lift simulations.
- A focus to ultra-deep waters scenario.
- New technologies involving gas-lift application.
20 / Good presentations, brochures. Glad to see all the gas-lift experts. / Various gas-lift applications world-wide an help sharing ideas. / EOR / Good place / meals.
21 / The practical (field) works. All the subjects were close to the field engineer routine. / I'd like to see works with a more sophisticated, scientific background. /
- Gas-lift automation.
- Gas-lift for high viscosity oils.
- New equipment.
22 / Sam Wildman / Range of subjects, and grouping of subjects. / Have in different locations each year. Helps to draw international customers. /
- Deepwater gas-lift applications.
- New or revised valves.
- Gas-lift as back-up for ESP.
23 / Paul Burtis / Meeting other gas-lift practitioners. Good presentations. / Should have a more technical forum with at least three papers (maybe?) /
- Gas choke calculations (throughput).
- Survey analysis, technical session paper on analysis.
- Would like to see a session on gas-lift failures vs. success.
24 / Bill Hering /
- Short - one and one half days.
- In Houston - close to work.
- Concentrated on gas-lift.
- Variety of speakers (vendors and operators).
- Fewer "black box" computer software talks - not relevant unless you know all the assumptions/limitations, or unless you own the software.
- More presentations (keep same number of days, but have two presenting rooms).
- My internet registration didn't take.
- Slick line operations and advances.
- Production logging.
- Coiled tubing gas-lift.
- Eliminating tubing/casing leak communication.
