2. Why is Parris glad that he has returned? What does he mean when he says “If he bring even one of these to God, that confession surely damns the others in the public eye, and none may doubt more that they are all linked to Hell. This way, unconfessed and claiming innocence, doubts are multiplied, many honest people will weep for them, and our good purpose is lost in their tears.” (p.112)

5. Hathorne says that at every execution he has seen naught but high satisfaction in the town, but Parris now fears that there will be a riot if others are executed (p. 111).
(a) What is the difference between those that have been executed (such as Bridget and Isaac) and those that are now to be executed (such as Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor)? (p.111)

21. John finally tears his confession up. Hale tells him that he cannot, for this will mean he will hang.
(a) What does John mean when he answers, “I can. And there’s your first marvel, that I can. You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs” (p.125).
(b) Why is this both a sad and joyful moment?
