Confirmed minutes of the meeting of the School of Psychology Quality Standing Committee held on Wednesday 10th September 2008 in Room AE3.06.

1. APOLOGIES

The committee welcomed two new members:

Nikki Cooper from The Place2Be – as representative for Collaborative partners.

2. TERMS OF REFERENCE

The committee noted the terms of reference for the committee, which remain unchanged from the previous year. Dallas Davis informed the committee that Ruth Carter (Head of Quality) has requested that all schools clarify how colleagues within schools are made aware of quality procedures (Action: RM /SA).

3. MINUTES

3.1 RECEIVED and CONFIRMED

3.1.1 The minutes of the meeting held on Wednesday 18th June 2008. Corrections included:

5.1.2 – Module PY2003 – was NOT APPROVED – module leader needs to map LO to assessment components and remove reference to thresholds.

- Module PYM202 is called Counselling & Psychotherapy: Application & Integration.

4. MATTERS ARISING

The following actions were noted:

4.1 – Pippa Dell is liaising with Programme Leaders (MAPP and MSc Psychology) regarding new EE appointments.

5.1.2 – PY1005 and PY2003 - were both approved by Chair’s action. PYM801-810 have now been resubmitted and approved.

5.1.3 – Rachel Mulvey will follow-up the initial approval for the MSc Clinical Psychology (Theory) (Action: RM).

5. EXTERNAL EXAMINERS

5.1 RECEIVED and NOTED

5.1.1 The report on External Examiners due to complete their term of office was checked and status noted:

- The nomination for Steve Jones was NOT APPPROVED. Pippa Dell and Shehnaz Awan are now producing a matrix to map EE activity over the last 5 years. This action is part of the EE review and rationalisation plans. Any new EE’s will be added to this matrix, indicating that these can no longer be used. Dallas Davis to find out date of next EE committee (Action: DD).

5.1.2 The committee noted the External Examiner Nomination for Dr Biza Stenfert Kroese (Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology) was APPROVED by Chair’s action on 21st July 2008. Shehnaz Awan sent nomination to QA on 23/07/08.

5.1.3 The committee APPROVED the External Examiner Extension of Duties for Jane Artess for the PG Cert/Diploma/MA Career Guidance. Shehnaz Awan to send nomination form to QA (Action: SA).

5.1.4 The committee APPROVED the External Examiner Nomination for Dr David Giles for the Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Shehnaz Awan to send nomination form to QA (Action: SA).

5.1.5 The committee APPROVED the External Examiner Nomination for Professor John Sparrow for the MSc Coaching Psychology and Coaching. Shehnaz Awan to send nomination form to QA (Action: SA).

6 PROGRAMME APPROVAL & MODIFICATION

6.1 RECEIVED, APPROVED & NOTED

6.1.1 The committee NOTED the updated list of upcoming approvals:

-  Graduate Diploma (ELCMHT) – the initial approval needs to be resubmitted. It was noted that ELCMHT are not recruiting to the programme this year in order to develop this programme further.

-  Psychosexual Therapy – the Professional body is not BACP but BASRT. This is going to VRSC in September.

-  PGCert Personal & Professional Development by distance learning was approved by VRSC in July 2008.

-  The BPS Psychology revalidation is scheduled for February 4th 2009. Elizabeth Attree is now the new programme leader. BPS accreditation will follow the revalidation.

6.1.2 The committee APPROVED the module: Coaching for Driver Development.

6.1.3 The committee APPROVED the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology: Assessment Reduction. Mark Rapley to update the prog spec to reflect this change and send to Dallas Davis (Action: MR).

6.1.4 Module PY3015 - The committee suggested that the exam for the Forensic Psychology (non-core) module remain at 90 minutes, but that the percentage which is currently stated as 40% and 20% be changed to 60%. Module was APPROVED- Shehnaz Awan to track changes and send to Joy Coogan (Action: SA).

6.1.5 The committee APPROVED module PY2501: Personal Development. Shehnaz Awan to inform Nash Popovic to put this on the new template and also to include learning outcomes (Action: SA).

6.1.6 The committee APPROVED module GCM201, which meets the assessment tariff - amendments to the assessment weightings included:

-  Changing the personal journal from a percentage to a PASS/FAIL.

-  Distributing marks among other elements of assessment.

-  Reducing the weighting of the transition paper to have a formative element.

6.1.7 The committee NOTED that module PYM502 now conforms to the assessment tariff, assuming that learning outcomes 7, 8, 10 are assessed in the research project. Shehnaz Awan to amend the module spec (Action: RM).

6.1.8 The committee NOTED the revised programme spec for Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Rachel Tribe to send an updated copy to Dallas Davis for inclusion on the UEL website (Action: RT/KG).

9.2 The committee NOTED the Doctorate in Educational & Child Psychology action plan. Both action plans were signed off by the committee.

10 VALIDATION & REVIEW SUB-COMMITTEE

11 QUALITY STANDING COMMITTEE

11.1 NOTED

11.1.4 The committee NOTED the QAA Code of Practice Section 9: Work-based and Placement learning. This was discussed at Programme leaders meeting and it was agreed that if there were any issues arising from the new CoP then this should be reported back to QSC.

12.1 NOTED

12.1.1 The committee NOTED that the rationale for the new programme title: PG Diploma Psychology with Empirical project. The title was approved (subject to submission of revised programme specification). The following action is required:

-  Programme spec will need to reflect this step-off programme and tracked changes on the prog spec to be submitted by next SPQSC meeting on Wed 22nd Oct 2008 (Action: AJ, cc. IL).

13 DATE & TIME OF NEXT MEETING

13.1 The next meeting is scheduled for Wed 22nd October 2008 at 1.30-3.30pm in Room UH308. It was noted that PD, AT and EB will be late due to a PhD review meeting.
