Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in a landscape construction context.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate understanding of the physical characteristics, uses, and limitations of a range of sundry materials as hard surfaces; and, prepareand lay sundry materials as hard surfaces.

1Performance criteria must be consistent with all relevant procedures, guidelines, and legislation (and their subsequent amendments) which include but are not limited to:

2Definition

Workplace procedures refer to the procedures and standards set by the client or employing organisation for laying sundry features.

3Range

Sundry materials may include but are not limited to - porous pebbles; loose aggregates – lime and bark paths, mulches and rocks, asphalts, turf pavers; plastic grid pavers, playground matting, artificial turf.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate understanding of the physical characteristics, uses, and limitations ofa range of sundry materials as hard surfaces.

Performance criteria

1.1Describe the physical characteristics, uses, and limitations of hard surface materials.

Outcome 2

Prepare and lay sundry materials ashard surfaces.

Rangeat least two sundry materials currently used in landscape construction.

Performance criteria

2.1Preparematerials and equipment.

2.2Prepare the work area.

Rangelevels, excavation, edgings, base, compact.

2.3Lay and finishsurfaces, and place jointing material (if required).

2.4Remove surplus material, and reinstate the siteon completion of the job.

2.5Select, prepare, and use tools and equipment appropriate for the task.

2.6Install or use safety warnings when work is accessible to the public.

2.7Work safely around other people and machinery on site.
