Attendance:

As with any subject, attendance is vital to success when learning a new language. I expect you to be present every day, which includes being in your seat when the bell rings. In the case of an excused absence, you have one day for every day you were absent to submit any assignment you may have missed. I do not accept late work for an unexcused absence. If you know in advance that you will be absent due to an extra-curricular activity or other circumstance, it is your responsibility to find out from me in advance what will be covered in class that day and any assignments you will have. *If you are absent the day of a review for an exam, you are still responsible for having to take the test on the regular day, unless otherwise discussed with me.

Passes:

Every student will be allowed to use a hallway pass to leave the classroom for whatever reason (locker, bathroom, water, etc.) three times each trimester. After using those three passes, the student may use another pass, but they will be required to serve a detention for each additional pass used. When leaving the classroom, cell phones will be left on the teacher’s desk until you return. With tardiness, after the first two days of class, students will follow the LHS Tardy Policy:

1st two “free” tardies = No consequence

3rd tardy = detention with classroom teacher

4th tardy = student referred to office

Use of Electronic Devices in Class:

While students are allowed to have personal electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, iPods, etc.) at school, I do not want to see them or hear them in class, as they generally are a distraction to the learning of you and other students. You are welcome to leave your device on the teacher’s desk at the beginning of class without penalty. If I hear or see them, they will be confiscated and taken to the office.

Homework Policy:

Homework will be given approximately 2-3 times per week. Homework is due at the beginning of the class period the following day. Homework is checked for completion and then reviewed in class. Homework is just that; it is meant to be done at home, not 2 minutes before I check your homework. If I see you frantically trying to finish it before I come by, you will not receive points for that assignment. The assignment must also be completely finished in order to receive full credit. Homework will be posted on my website daily. When a student is absent, he or she may check the website to see what was missed.

LHS Spanish Re-take Policy for Summative Tests:

You will be allowed to re-take up to TWO summative tests per trimester on which you have earned less than an 80%; however, your final grade (after re-take) on the test will be no higher than an 80%. In order to retake these tests, you must complete the Re-take ticket attached to this document.

Use of the target language in LHS Spanish classes

It is essential to your language development to interact with your teacher and classmates in Spanish. Your oral language grades will reflect your use of Spanish and your contribution to our communicative classroom on a daily basis. You will receive oral language scores using a 10 point scale to evaluate how well the student uses Spanish to interact with teacher and peers:

  • during class activities, both small and large group.
  • between activities, including to socialize.
  • from bell to bell.
  • without reminders.

Technology:

Throughout the year, we will be using technology in various capacities. You will use things like Google Docs, School Email, and other internet sites to complete certain assignments. I recommend that you check your school email and my website regularly to make sure you are up to date with what is going on in class. Technology is a great tool for learning in the classroom, but it is not always perfect. Patience is always good to have 

Foreign Language Department Plagiarism Policy:

The use of on-line translators, essay sites, software for translating and electronic or on-line dictionaries, etc. for completing classroom assignments is prohibited. All products that are submitted must be that individual’s original work and ideas. The use of other people as resources for the completion of such products will not be accepted. The consequence for plagiarizing work or completing work as a joint effort will result in the student(s) receiving zero credit for the product; parents will be notified. Repeat offenses will be referred to the LHS administration for possible disciplinary action, which may include detention/suspension and possible loss of computer privileges.

Random Sidenote:

I look forward to a great year of helping you to learn the Spanish language and culture. While learning a foreign language is hard work, it is also very rewarding and a lot of fun. Knowing a foreign language is beneficial in virtually anything you end up doing in life, so take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

I have read and understood the policies mentioned in this syllabus.
