Notes on end of Key Stage 2 assessment
Dear Parents,
I feel it is important you are informed as to what will happen during the end of Key Stage 2 assessments and what the outcomes for your child mean. Please read these notes prior to our consultation; I hope they will help clarify elements of our discussion.
· In May, all children in Year 6 will complete six SATs papers: Reading; English Spelling; English Punctuation and Grammar; Arithmetic; Mathematical reasoning 1; Mathematical reasoning 2.
· In July the results are published to schools and will be reported to you in your child’s annual report. ‘SATs results’ means children’s achievement towards the ‘Expected standard’ for each subject, determined by the government. This will mean the outcome of the test for reading, the tests for maths (combined) and the tests for Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) (combined), plus teacher-assessment of writing and science.
o (NB: In 2017, 61% of children nationally achieved the expected standard in all of reading, writing and maths combined.)
· For maths, reading and GPS, children will either ‘achieve the expected standard’ or ‘not achieve the expected standard’.
· Writing is teacher-assessed by me based on all writing produced across the year. My judgements will be reviewed internally and may be moderated by external assessors. Children will be awarded one of the following classifications if they have shown sufficient evidence of all the criteria within it: Working below the expected standard; Working towards the expected standard; Working at the expected standard; Working at greater depth within the expected standard. This is not a ‘best-fit’ judgement but is based on evidence collected against all objectives. Teacher-assessed science outcomes will be ‘Working at the expected standard’, or not.
· At the end of the year, in addition to their SATs results, I will indicate my teacher-assessment of whether each child is ‘Working at the expected standard’ for reading and maths, or ‘Has not met the expected standard’.
The final outcome of the KS2 assessments is a culmination of each child’s seven years in primary education. Over the remaining six months until SATs, and in the remaining time after SATs, every effort will continue to be made to develop each child to achieve their full potential, both academically and in all other ways, to prepare them for transition to secondary school. In our meeting I will indicate possible or likely outcomes for your child at the end of KS2 and advise on the most important next steps for them towards their own learning targets.
Many thanks,
Mr N
