Fourth Grade Language Arts

Course Description and Philosophy

Fourth grade Language Arts curriculum encompasses units on grammar, spelling words and strategies, punctuation, writing skills and mechanics, proofreading, sentence structure and sentence variety. The curriculum includes developing complete paragraph structure beginning with one paragraph leading up to a five-paragraph essay. All these skills lead to the student’s ability to develop an outline and create a research paper. Through learning these basic skills the children will become more proficient in all areas of Language Arts.

Student performance will be evaluated using a variety of assessments including teacher- generated tests and quizzes, homework, independent work, research projects, Collins Writing Focus Correction Areas, which allows for differentiated learning, self-correction and class participation.

Differentiated Learning Activities

Differentiated Learning Activities

Students will be given pretest at the beginning of each spelling unit. Replacement spelling list, based on same spelling pattern, will be provided for students testing out. This allows for the student to work at a higher skill level. Modified spelling list for students with learning disabilities.

Students develop spelling patterns in order to facilitate their spelling and writing to better communicate their ideas.
