Do not expose the unit to rain or water splashes, and do not place liquid containers or incandescent objects like candles on top of the unit.

Any change in the configuration of the unit must be carried out by a qualified technician. Should any connection / disconnection task be done, always disconnect the unit from the mains supply.

There are no user serviceable parts inside the unit.

2. INTRODUCTION

The PKUB is a professional two channel amplified mixer in a tabletop format, incorporating a powerful Class-D stereo amplifier and a universal power supply.

The PKUB is a professional and compact solution for sound equipments of which end user is not necessarily expert in audio equipment usage, since it offers simple power up and operation, like those of domestic audio equipment. Also, its absolutely quiet operation as well as its particular format and design make it perfect for use in obvious places, where classic professional equipment with a rack format would not be suitable.

These are its main features:

  • Two-channel input mixer, with one MIC/LINE input and one LINE only input
  • Class-D stereo integrated amplifier, 2 x 50W RMS @ 4 
  • Direct AUX IN (Channel 2) line input via a front panel mini-jack, ideal to connect iPod® type players, mp3 players, multimedia players, etc. The same stereo connection is duplicated on back panel for Channel 2 (RCA connectors)
  • A Type A USB connector supplies power to charge batteries of iPod® type players, mp3 players, multimedia players, etc.
  • Includes a Talkover function assigned to Input 1, with an internal recovery time selector (see configuration diagram)
  • Microphone sensitivity level can be adjusted with a back panel trimmer
  • Internally switchable phantom power supply (+15V DC) for MIC (Channel 1)
  • Level control for each input channel
  • 3-Band tone controls on the back panel, independent for each input channel and adjustable with a screwdriver
  • Main output level rotary knob also working as a MUTE push button
  • Output volume and mute remote control by means of the supplied infrared remote handset
  • Line-level auxiliary output for a reinforcement subwoofer or another audio equipment
  • Direct MIX IN input to the mixing "bus", allowing to connect external equipment, e.g. another PKUB or a SAM type mixer
  • General "MUTE" remote control by external contact closure, ideal for connection of fire detection systems or any other safety device. Internally selectable as "NO / NC" (normally open / normally closed).
  • Back panel MONO/STEREO mode selector

3. INSTALLATION

The PKUB is a professional mixer specially designed to be operated by non-technical users and for tabletop usage. For this reason, its adjustments for microphone input sensitivity and tone controls on each input are located on the back panel, and tone controls are adjustable with a screwdriver only, therefore preventing the risk of unwanted operations.

Keep the unit far from noise sources (variable voltage regulators, motors, etc…) as well as from power cables.

Also, you must not block ventilation opening with obstacles that could interfere with the airflow of the equipment convection cooling.

The PKUB operates under voltages from 90 to 264 V at 47 to 63 Hz. This device features an over dimensioned power supply that adapts to the mains voltage in any country of the world with no need to make any adjustments.

In order to protect the unit from eventual overloads, the PKUB is protected by a timered power fuse (25) of 4A. If it gets blown up, you must replace it with an identical one. NEVER REPLACE THE FUSE WITH ANOTHER ONE WITH A HIGHER VALUE.

CAUTION: Fuse substitutions have to be performed by a qualified technician.

4. INPUTS

The PKUB INPUT 1 accepts two types of signal: MIC and stereo LINE. You can select one of them with the back panel switch (14). On the back panel, a sensitivity knob and a MIC jack connector handle microphone signals (level range: – 20dBVto – 50dBV) whereas stereo line signals are connected to LINE RCA connectors, also located on the back panel.

INPUT 2 only accepts stereo line signals and has a front mini-jack connector and another RCA type connector on the back panel.

MIC input allows balanced connection. In this case, the stereo 1/4" jack wiring has to be done as indicated:

Live or direct signalTip

Cold or inverted signalRing

Ground/EarthSleeve

Microphones must be low impedance (200 to 600) and monophonic. For NON balanced connections, use monophonic jacks. It is also possible to make a non balanced connection with a stereo jack connector by shorcircuiting the center ring to ground.

It supplies phantom power in order to use condenser microphones (positive on the tip and the ring, negative on the sleeve). An internal jumper is used to switch it on/off. See configuration diagram for more details.

The AUX IN (INPUT 2) line input on a front panel mini-jack connector (6) is summed in parallel with the same channel from the back panel. It has the following wiring:

L channelTip

R channelRing

GroundSleeve

Stereo LINE inputs accept -10 dBV (0.31 V) line level signals from CD and DVD players, multimedia devices, iPod®, MP3 players, radio tuners, TV receivers, etc. Turntables CAN NOT be directly connected to this unit, because the PKUB has no RIAA preamp equipped input.

The line MIX INPUT is a direct access to the main mixing "bus". This input with 0dB (1V) sensitivity is especially useful to interconnect e.g. two PKUB units or a PKUB and a SAM type mixer, etc., therefore increasing the number of mixing channels and inputs.

5. OUTPUTS

The PKUB has a low impedance main amplified stereo output labelled OUT (20, 21) to connect loudspeakers: 2 x 50 W RMS @ 4 .

Use special care when setting the mixer general output level, VOLUME (5), so that CLIP indicators never remain permanently lit in the upper part of the VU-meters bargraphs (9), but only (and at the most) at the rhythm of the sound sequence lowest frequencies.

The PKUB has a non amplified stereo auxiliary output labeled SUB/AUX OUT (18) with RCA connectors. Its output level is proportional to the equipment's general volume setting. Next to this output, a MONO/ST selector allows to choose for this signal and the amplified outputs a monophonic format (sum of L and R channels).

The PKUB allows to bridge outputs. In order to do this, simply press the back panel MONO switch and connect the output as silk printed.

The PKUB incorporates a MUTE (22) remote control that can be activated by an external potential free contact, affecting all inputs. This control is especially designed to connect fire detection systems or any other safety device. It is internally selectable as "NO / NC" (normally open / normally closed) by means of a jumper. See configuration diagram for more details.

The MUTE front panel red LED indicator lights up whenever the unit is muted by the MUTE external contact or by the user operating the MUTE control on the front panel or on the remote handset.

6. INFRARED REMOTE CONTROL

The equipment includes as standard a remote control and its infrared detector to control general volume and mute. Three keys control these functions:

  • VOL UP (upward arrow)
  • VOL DOWN (downward arrow)
  • MUTE (crossed out speaker symbol)

Always try to point the remote handset directly toward the PKUB front panel REMOTE detector, within range and preferably in front of it, without obstacles between them. The maximum response distance for the emitting/receiving system depends on the incidence angle of infrared signals on the receiver, on the battery load in the remote handset and on the existence of ambient interfering signals, such as other infrared signals or emissions coming from certain types of fluorescent lamps.

7. CONSIDERATIONS

7.1. Starting up

This is directly done by means of the mains switch (24), the blue ON indicator (8) remaining lit in blue on the front panel when the unit is powered on.

In a complete audio installation, it is important to start up the equipment in the following sequence: sound sources, mixer, equalizers, active filters and finally power amplifiers. To turn them off the sequence should follow an inverse pattern.

7.2. Gain and input levels

The PKUB has an effective adjustment system for the microphone input (channel 1) sensitivity, allowing a precise matching to input levels. This system uses a back panel trimmer (15) for this setting.

Also, two front panel rotary knobs (INPUT 1 and INPUT 2) allow to adjust the level of signals sent from Input 1 and 2 to the mixing bus of the equipment for a later amplification that will be proportional to the front panel VOLUME control setting.

7.3. Equalization

Tone controls (10, 11, 12) provide ±15 dB gain/attenuation for each of the three bands, centered on 100Hz, 1.8kHz and 10kHz. Because of the intended applications of this unit, its tone control system is adjustable by screwdriver, thus preventing unauthorised or unintentional use during its normal operation.

7.4. SIGNAL indicators

The “SIGNAL” indicator (2) lights up to indicate a signal presence at inputs.

7.5. CLIP indicators

“CLlP” indicators light up when the signal is near the real clipping (saturation) level. It is normal for CLIP indicators to be lit at the bass frequencies rhythm for high operating levels, as these frequencies have the higher energy content. You must take care that these indicators do not remain continuously lit.

7.6. VOLUME control knob

The front panel VOLUME control knob has three functions:

  • Adjusting the unit output volume, when you turn it
  • Activating the unit's mute function, when you press it
  • Deactivating the unit's mute function, when you press it again or turn it

The MUTE LED indicator lights up in red when the unit is muted.

Last volume setting is stored and at power-on the unit will be set to the same volume level as when it was last turned off.

NOTE: if the unit is muted by the back panel MUTE external contact closure or opening, all front panel and remote handset controls are deactivated. If MUTE is externally activated while the device is already muted, the device remains muted after the end of the external activation.

7.7. Auto-Standby function

The unit automatically enters standby mode (low power consumption) after two minutes of no input signal. In standby mode, the front panel ON LED indicator has a variable light intensity that increases and decreases according to a slow cycle. In this mode, the other LED indicators are permanently switched off.

The PKUB wakes up again in following conditions:

  • An audio signal is detected on any input
  • Any key of the remote control is pressed. Its assigned command is NOT executed that time
  • The volume is changed (UP/DOWN) or the front panel VOLUME control is pressed. The assigned command is NOT executed that time
  • A status change has been detected at the external MUTE input. The assigned command IS executed
  • Auto Standby can be deactivated with the back panel switch

If the unit was muted before entering the standby mode, the MUTE LED indicator is switched off in standby mode and lights up when the unit is switched ON again.

7.8. MUTE - REMOTE LED indicator

The MUTE LED indicator on the front panel also indicates when signals sent with the remote handset are received by the infrared detector: it lights up in green when infrared signals are received and in orange when you try to increase or decrease the volume beyond its maximum/minimum limits, with the remote control or the encoder.

7.9. Ground loops, background noise

You must always avoid interconnected grounds between signal sources. It means grounds must never arrive by two or more different ways, since this could produce "hum" ("ground loop") that would even interfere with the sound reproduction quality.

Cable shielding, when connected to the chassis, must never be interconnected, so as to avoid ground loops.

The PKUB amplified mixer has been conceived to obtain the lowest possible background noise. Independently of the electronic design the background noise will directly depend on the correct use and installation of the mixing unit.

I. e.: setting a channel VOL to "2" and the output to "10" is not the same as the other way round. In the first case, the signal coming to the mixing amplifier - which has got its own noise - is low, and so is the signal-to-noise ratio (low signal). When the output amplifier boosts the whole signal we will get a very high background noise. In the second case - with the channel fader at maximum - the mixing level is high, and so is the signal-to-noise ratio. When the signal reaches the VOL OUTPUT and is boosted, it will keep a much better signal-to-noise ratio than in the preceding case.

7.10. Cleaning

The front panel should not be cleaned with dissolvent or abrasive substances because silk-printing could be damaged. To clean it, use a soft cloth slightly wet with water and neutral liquid soap; dry it with a clean cloth. Be careful that water never gets into the unit through the holes of the front panel.
