ROUTE 11 – MAIN STREET, DARBY

SURFACE TRACK RENEWAL PROJECT

SCOPE OF WORK

-This project includes the reconstruction of the Eastbound and Westbound tracks from the intersection of Island Avenue and Main Street to the intersection of 9th and Main Streets in Darby, Delaware County.

SCHEDULE

-PHASE I – May 5, 2014 through May 30, 2014 – Flash Butt Weld rail strings in advance of construction to expedite project. Rails will be welded / stored at three (3) locations with regular trolley service in operation: Between Island Avenue and Water Street on the South shoulder; between 4th & 5th Streets on the South shoulder; and between 9th Street and Powell Road on the South shoulder.

-PHASE II – June 1, 2014 through August 30, 2014 – This phase includes the reconstruction of both tracks between Island Avenue and 9th Street. Construction will begin west of Island Avenue and will progress westward through completion at 9th Street. Construction activities will be contained in a moving three-block area to reduce inconvenience to the community.

DETOURS DURING CONSTRUCTION

-All Route 11 trolley service will be turned, West to East at Island Avenue, via Elmwood Depot

-Main Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic in five separate, multi-block construction areas for this project.

-All side streets in the affected construction area will be closed to thru traffic. Local traffic will be permitted up to the construction site.

-Posted traffic detours will be erected and maintained around the work area in progress.

GENERAL INFORMATION

-Vehicular parking will not be permitted in the area or adjacent to the tracks being reconstructed.

-Exceptions/Arrangements will be made as required for those with special needs

-Emergency, trash, and delivery vehicles will have access as required

-Walking Access will be arranged for businesses

-Normal hours of operation – 7:00am to 8:00pm Monday thru Friday. Weekend work may be required to maintain the project schedule.

TRACK FACTS

-The existing tracks were installed back in the mid 1980’s

-Street structure supporting the tracks has deteriorated due to water leaks, traffic and the overall age of the existing street surface, which requires increased maintenance to operate safe and reliable service.

-SEPTA forces will excavate renew and pave approximately 4,800’ of double tracks between Island Avenue and 9th Street.
