BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB)
Rowan University
ADVISING GUIDE
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
- The BS in MCB is intended primarily for students interested in biomedical or health professions. Students will be trained in the theoretical and laboratory aspects of modern molecular and cellular biology. Students from this program will go onto competitive positions in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, graduate programs (MS and PhD) in biomedical or molecular biology fields, orhealth profession programs (medical, veterinary, dental, or pharmacy school).
- This degree officially begins in Fall 2018.The major is restrictedand therefore new and current students must meet certain benchmarks to enter the major, as described below.
COURSES
- Review the followingsections of this document to learnabout the courses required for this degree:
- Sample 4-year Sequence
- List of Required Courses
- List of Restricted Electives
- Because the goal of the major is to prepare students for competitive fields, it is expected that students adhere to high academic and personal standards. Those students that do not meet these standards will be advised to change to another major.
ACCEPTANCEINTO MCB FOR INCOMING FIRST-YEAR ROWAN STUDENTS
- You are initially acceptedinto the MCB major based upon your application to Rowan. To aid in the acceptance, you should officially submit all materials (e.g., SAT scores, AP scores, ACT scores) to Rowan as early as you can.
- In some cases, you also will be required to pass the chemistry and math placement exams, so that you are placed into Chemistry I and Calculus I in the first semester of your first year. Thus, you should take Rowan placement exams as early as you can. Information about these tests is provided here:
TRANSFER INTO MCB FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
- You must satisfy the Benchmarks depending on your year number at Rowan, as of Fall 2018, as outlined in the table on Page 3.
- In order for us to review your application, all of your transferred courses must be accounted for by the Rowan registrar. Please ensure that the Registrar has your up-to-date course information.
- If you believe that you meet the criteria to transfer into MCB, then please email the appropriate MCB advisor to set up an appointment:
Freshman – Lorenzo Matthews located in Savitz – University Advising Center (UAC)
Sophomores – Patty DashefskyinScience Hall
Juniors A-J – Patty DashefskyinScience Hall
Juniors K- Z – Christina Davidson-Tucciin Science Hall
Seniors – Christina Davidson-Tucci in Science Hall
- If you plan to transfer in Fall 2018, you should take the appropriate courses in Spring 2018 to stay on track for this major.
- It is recommended that you do not transfer into the MCB major after your 2ndyear in college, because the course-load required for the MCB degree will significantly delay your graduation.
