Instructions Sheet TBL: Food Labelling Year 2
Steps involved in calculating the number of stars a product receives
STEP 1: Guess the number of stars you think your product may receive
STEP 2: Decide which food category your product belongs to from the following groups:
1 Beverage (not dairy)
1D Dairy beverage
3 Oils and spreads
3D Cheese, processed cheese with calcium >320mg/100g
2D Other dairy foods eg yoghurt, dairy dessert, low calcium cheese products
2 All other foods
STEP 3:
-Look at the Nutrition Information Panel and document the:
energy, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, protein and fibre per 100g/ 100mL
-Calculate the baseline points from table 1 or 2for energy, saturated fat, sodium and sugar
-Calculate the baseline points from table 4 for protein and fibre (we wont take into account any V points today)
Per 100g/100mL / Amount present / Baseline points / V points / Proteinpoints / Fibre points
Energy (kilojoules)
saturated fat (g)
total sugars (g)
sodium (mg)
protein (g)
fibre (g)
TOTAL
STEP 4Final HSR score =
TOTAL Baseline points
subtract (V points + P points+ F points)
STEP 5Calculate the Health Star Rating using Table 5
Example soft drink.
STEP 1: Guess the number of stars you think your product may receive:?????

-Calculate the baseline points from table 4 for protein and fibre
Per 100g/100mL / Amount present / Baseline points / V points / Proteinpoints / Fibre points
Energy (kilojoules) / 204 / 0
saturated fat (g) / 0 / 0
total sugars (g) / 11.5 / 2
sodium (mg) / 15 / 0
protein (g) / 0.2 / 0
fibre (g) / 0 / 0
TOTAL / 2
STEP 4 Final HSR score = Baseline points – (V points) – (P points) – (F points)
= 2 - 0 - 0 - 0
= 2
STEP 5 Calculate the Health Star Rating using Table 5 1 STAR
