YOUNG VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE IN CHESHIRE WEST LIBRARIES
Cheshire West and Chester Council Libraries are looking for volunteers aged between 13 and 24 to work as Reading Activists to support the Summer Reading Challenge over the summer holidays.
Volunteers once recruited, will be given training and help library staff in duties such as encouraging and motivating children to complete the Summer Reading Challenge which this year is titled ‘Mythical Maze’ and to help with displays, events and craft activities funded by local Councillors.
The initiative is part of a national scheme coordinated by the Reading Agency.
The Summer Reading Challenge is free for young readers to join and runs from Saturday July 12th until Saturday September 13th.
Children can collect their ‘Mythical Maze’ membership pack from any Cheshire West and Chester Library, read six books from the fantastic selection available and collect stickers and prizes along the way. Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate at a special awards ceremony.
Children of any age are welcome to join the challenge, although it is most suitable for those of primary school age.
Reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays and the Summer Reading Challenge is produced annually by the Reading Agency and delivered by libraries throughout the UK ,to encourage children to get into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence.
Clare Ashbee – Specialist Librarian for Cheshire West and Chester Libraries, said: “In 2013 more than 4,700 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge across Cheshire West.
“Volunteers will enable us to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate again this year whilst gaining many benefits themselves.
“Not only is encouraging children to get reading and enjoy books extremely rewarding, but volunteering is a great way to gain experience and is sure to impress any future employer, college or university.”
All volunteers will receive training and a free goody bag, as well as the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and develop their skills plus a reference from a library manager. Volunteer hours also count towards Duke of Edinburgh awards and UCAS.
Volunteering opportunities are available at the following Libraries: Barnton, Blacon, Frodsham, Hope Farm, Lache, Malpas and Wharton.
