Benjamin McFarland Long

B M Long (son of John and Nancy D Long) was born November 5, 1827 and died June 17, 1903. He was the first white child born in Carroll County, Georgia. He was educated in the schools of Carrollton. He was one of the first volunteers in the Mexican War, and served throughout that war under the command of Robert E Lee. He went into the mercantile business with his father and continued in this business for the rest of his life. He moved to north Alabama some time before the civil war and became a prominent factor in the development of Walker County. He entered the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the war and was Captain of the first company from Walker County, which he orginized. He entered the Army of Confederate States of America as Captain, Company G, Col. Looney's regiment, Hindman's Division. After the war he lived in Jasper until he moved to Cordova, the town that he founded. He was prominent in the coal development of north Alabama, and was responsible for the Indian Head Mills being located in Cordova. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1865. He served in the Georgia legislature from 1872 to 1874, and the Alabama legislature 1880-1882; was presidential elector from the sixth Alabama district in 1884. He was candidate for Governor of Alabama on the Republican ticket in 1890 and was a candidate for Congress in 1894 on the ticket of that party. He was originally a whig and after the war became a member of the Republican party. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a Royal Arch Mason. He was married near Carrollton, Georgia, on the 17th day of October 1854 to Amanda Caroline Wooten, a daughter of Henry Pope Wooten and his wife, Mellissa Caroline Hinton. To this union were born eleven children;

1. Henry Whitfield married Lula Mandeville and had; Lula -- married Charles Roop, Mandeville -- married Helen West, Stella -- married Francis Long, Mary -- married Jess Travis, and Helen-- married Shirley Boykin.

2. John Benjamin married Missouri Musgrove and their children were: Francis Musgrove, married Stella Long, and had John Wit; Gay married Judge Ernest Lacy.

3. Carrie Gertrude married first Newton Carnak; second Roy Garner, and had three children.

4. Thomas Leeper married Augusta Sprott and their children were: Capt Henry M; Carrie married W. J. Worthington and has several children; and Fred W. graduated at Annapolis and served in the Navy several years, resigned and is now in the commercial field.

5. Robert Wooten married Alice McQueen and has one daughter

6. Ida Jane married Dr. J. M. Miller and had John M and Gertrude, who married Lecil Gray and has two children.

7. Effie Lou married Horace Stewart and had two sons, John and Horace Jr. who married Lucille Long and has two sons, and Caroline married Dr. Griffin.

8. Ada Claire married Sidney Holderness and had Sidney Jr and Claire.

9. Pope McFarland married Bertie Ellis and they have two sons; Edgar and Pope Jr.

10. Jesse Orville married Nona Bell Sprott, they have four children.

11. Edgar Wooten married first Catherine Phifer; second Ruth Lacy Long. He is probate Judge of Walker County, Alabama.
