HISTORY

The Felton Laboratory Charter School, originally Felton Training School, was established in 1920, as an outgrowth of a kindergarten, and was developed under the guidance of Miss Sara B. Henderson, Instructor of Kindergarten and Primary Methods in 1920. As a part of the University’s Department of Education, this program continued to grow as courses in methods, observations, and directed teaching were added to the curriculum.

In 1924, a four room building was donated by the joint cooperation of the General Education Board and the Rosenwald Fund for teacher education purposes in connection with the normal course of study.

In 1964, with the expansion of the Teacher Education program, a new building was constructed and Felton Training School was renamed Felton Laboratory School.

In 1997, Felton Laboratory School updated the building by adding a state-of-the-art Music and Art room. The spacious Music room was designed to be acoustically sound. The Science Lab was also updated at this time to include ample storage space and work stations to enhance investigations in Science.

Felton Laboratory School became a charter school in September 2014. It began operation as a charter school in beginning in July 2015.

Today, Felton Laboratory Charter School continues to strive to provide the best quality education for students in Kindergarten through eighth grade.

PHILOSOPHY

The learning experiences that take place in the classroom environment are considered to be a meaningful and essential part of the educational process. Absences and tardiness tend to disrupt the continuity of the instructional program and the time lost from class is irretrievable, particularly in terms of opportunity for interaction and exchange of ideas between students and teachers. Therefore, because classroom attendance is considered to be an integral part of the student’s course of study, students are expected to attend all classes and to be prompt in attendance for each class.

GOALS

Here at Felton Laboratory Charter School, it is our goal to provide a relevant, integrated and challenging curriculum in a safe and secure environment for all students. We want all students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, who are responsible and knowledgeable as successful life-long learners, and productive citizens in this ever-changing world. We recognize that each child is unique, so in cooperation with our parents and the community, we are committed to providing a variety of learning experiences and opportunities that will promote high expectations that can aid the overall growth and well-being of the total child. We want to ensure that all students become life-long learners for the future, as well as perform to their highest potential, achieve academic excellence, social awareness, and community responsibility.

It is our expectation that all students meet or exceed expected State and National goals for academic excellence.
