The DINOSCENE

WEEKLY NOTE

Week of September 29, 2008

Dear Parents,

We had a good week of school, in spite of my absence last week. The students handled the change of routine very well. I am proud of their behavior and efforts with the substitutes. Please continue to help and encourage your child with completing assignments on time, completing the homework, and having the homework to check in class, such as the Home Links. This is important and it teaches them responsibility as well.

Parent conferences on are full swing this month. Please check the back of the newsletter for scheduled conferences this week. If you cannot make a scheduled conference, please let me know and we will reschedule. I thank everyone for his or her diligence in scheduling a conference. I look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing your child’s progress and success.

Our “Fall Fun Center” day will be on Friday, October 31st in the afternoon. Look for the letter of information to come home this Friday in your child’s Friday Folder.

This is what we did last week:

READING/LANG. ARTS/WRITING:

We had a very busy week with our reading block this week. We took a “ Beginning of the Year” assessment test and maintained our weekly story. The students did great with this amount of work. This week we will focus on making predictions, identifying the characteristics of a magazine article, identify high frequency and robust vocabulary words for this week. This week’s spelling words will focus on the long /a/ vowel sound with spellings of /ai/ and /ay/. Students received this week’s spelling list on Friday and it should be in their spelling list sleeve. This is list #8 and the test will be on Friday, Oct. 10th.

MATH:

We practiced addition and subtraction with the “Frames and Arrows” method and the “What’s My Rule?” method. We also practiced shortcuts for subtracting numbers from 8 and 9. We will finish unit 2 this week and take the unit test on Friday.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:

In Science, we have been studying chapter 1 on Matter. We have learned about the three types of matter – solid, liquid, and gas. This week we will focus on “What is a Gas?”. This will be the last lesson in this chapter. We will take the chapter test next week.

In Social Studies, we have been exploring Florida, citizenship, and responsibility in our Studies Weekly magazines. We have also been learning about our classmates through our “Stars of the Week” activity. This week we will learn about Taylor Jackson, Dalton Johnson, Alahna Knapp, and David LeShane. We are a bit behind schedule, but we will get caught up to date this week. The four students mentioned above have a poster they will need to complete and return by Friday to share with the class.

HOMEWORK:

A “Homework This Week” schedule is placed in your child’s binder each Monday. This schedule outlines their daily homework. Please refer to it for the daily homework assignments. Thank you for your support.

Have a wonderful weekendJ!
