Role Overview:
The role of Administrative Services Staff in CSIRO is to provide administrative and management services to support the effective provision of research and development activities. This involves the development and implementation and/or administration of policies, systems and procedures that assist the Organisation and the Business Units to achieve their objectives and meet Government and regulatory responsibilities.
This position sits within CSIRO Publishing in the Journals Publishing team and publishes scholarly journals, all with academic editors leading the peer review process.
The Journals Manager is responsible for a number of scholarly journals, ensuring timely peer review, delivering high levels of service to editors, authors and external partners, and contributing to raising journal quality, reputation, readership and subscriber base, consistent with the CSIRO Publishing strategy and CSIRO Values.
Duties and Key Result Areas:
·  Be the primary point of contact for society partners, delegating / managing up where necessary
·  Support Editorial Boards through provision of services and advice
·  Through management of Editorial Assistants, foster a culture of constant improvement (e.g. through training and mentoring).
·  Deliver timely peer review of manuscripts by allocating activities and directing tasks within a small team
·  Preparation of journal reports
·  Manage online submission system (ScholarOne), make or commission changes and improvements to the system as required. Provide training in use of the submission system to Editors and Editorial Assistants.
·  Ensure timely payment and invoicing of editorial honoraria, travel reimbursements and publication charges
·  Provide support at conferences presenting a positive face for the journals and CSIRO Publishing
·  Keep abreast of developments in the scientific communities relevant to the journals, the STM market and the publishing industry in general
·  Carry out any other assignments as required
·  Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
·  Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives, establishing networks with other teams and professionals in their field.
Selection Criteria:
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed
Pre-Requisites:
1.  Education/Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in a science, technical or medical field or equivalent experience and knowledge.
Essential Criteria:
1.  Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with journal publishing partners including editors, authors and learned societies through excellent service provision and effective communication.
2.  Minimum three year’s experience in STM scholarly publishing, including deep knowledge of peer review and peer review systems, publication processes, an awareness of issues and trends in scholarly communication.
3.  Proven experience compiling and presenting publishing metrics.
4.  Demonstrated ability to use initiative, judgement and flexibility in determining priorities and solving problems
5.  Demonstrated ability to work successfully both independently and in a team environment, and contribute to collective outputs.
Desirable Criteria:
1.  Experience working with ScholarOne or similar on line submission system.
2.  Willingness and ability to travel
3.  Subject expertise in biological, chemical or health sciences
