REMEMBER IN PRAYER

Mary Jo’s sister-in-law has been hospitalized. She lives out of state. Please remember her when you pray.

The little friend of Mary Jo seems to be improving and we are so glad to hear this. Keep him in your prayers.

Brenda and her mom need our prayers. Her mom is doing fairly well but her health is still not good.

Cindy requested prayer for a Puerto Rican man who comes to their store. She requested prayer for his soul as she has tried to talk to him concerning this.

Jim Bryan, son-in-law of Ruth Hassell, (Yvonne’s husband) had surgery Friday to remove tumors from his pancreas and it was determined he had cancer. He may start treatment soon. Please remember him when you pray and also Yvonne, as she still has lymphoma as well as Lyme Disease.

MEMBER NOTES

Damien and Alyssa went on a trip with Jennifer and Ian to Disney World, Sea World, etc. in Florida. Damien was really impressed with the plane ride. He will have some things to tell us when he gets back!

Susan Coon received a medal from the Buddies group with which she is associated.

Zach and Dillon have been on a Retreat this past week. We hope they had a great time. Dillon will soon be entering college and before the hard work begins, he needs to have some FUN!

THE COON FAMILY VACATION

I would like to share some of the experiences of the Coon family while vacationing for 20 days in Yellowstone, many states out West, Alaska and Canada. I don’t think it will bring to mind the National Lampoons Vacation! They traveled most of the way by RV. I think they went over 4,000 miles and they took the back roads, which sometimes meant the rough, muddy, unpaved wilderness roads.

They are all probably on a diet since they have come back because of all the cinnamon buns big enough to feed four, the pancakes the size of a dinner plate, moon pie ice cream, and huckleberry ice cream, not to mention all of the other things they got along the way.

They saw many babies – elk and bison – right after their birth and they constantly saw all sorts of wildlife and birds on these back roads.

Inflation was a little more significant on this trip. At one town they gassed up at 4.66 a gallon, but that was better than the $5 or $6 a gallon in Canada. Bread ran $4 a loaf, but you might get it for $2 at Walmart’s. Milk was about $6 a gallon and ice cream was $9.99 a pt. of $12 a gallon.

The good news is that Ed got a certificate for driving the entire length of the Alaska Highway. He well deserved it too, because he had to endure the third degree from the Border agents. One female agent drilled him on what kind of gun he might have at home!

They checked in each night at a different RV park and many of them were located right beside a railroad track. According to Betty, they would run out and watch the trains pass. She wondered if the locals thought they were from mars. (Betty, there are probably railroad tracks in Mt. Juliet, or close by.) They stayed at the Green Acres RV Park, but didn’t see Ava or Eddie. They also checked in at the Run A Muck RV Park. I believe I would have passed that one by.

Some of the back roads they took were good and some not! In Canada they took the Top of the World Highway not far from the Arctic Circle. They encountered a detour down a narrow fire road, rough, with no guardrails, not a road you would want to go on in a RV, but there were six RVs along with them, so they went down this detour to avoid a slippery slope. But that was the GOOD road. When they got to the US side, the road was muddy, slick, potholed, and wash-boarded. This road led to Chicken, Alaska.

They were entertained along the way by Susan singing “God on the Mountain.”

They had a lot of interesting places to stop along the way. One such place was “Wal Mike’s”. There was one of everything and resembled a museum of things past, missed with useful stuff. Probably does as well as Walmart’s in that territory.

They went through a community called Gate Lake where many houses were decorated with tires on the roof……for insulation??? But they were well protected with NO TRESPASSING SIGNS. The junkier the houses, the more signs they saw.

Betty would advise anyone who is going out of the country to check with their credit card company. Many times their card would not work in Canada. One man said they didn’t have a chip. She had to make multiple calls to the credit card company.

Ed said it was time to go home when Betty resorted to cleaning the RV! Susan spent a lot of time watching TV or movies. They had to go to bed before dark sometimes because dusk came around 11:00 in Alaska.

I’ve given some of the more “colorful” events of their trip. But I know they saw some incredibly beautiful scenery and the back roads, though rough, made it more interesting and real. They saw the beautiful Mt. McKinley. Betty says it was originally called Denali, an Indian name, meaning “the high one.” It was renamed for President McKinley (who was not associated with Alaska).

One interesting place they saw was an Athabascan graveyard. There was a fence around the graves with “spirit houses” on top of the grave. They put what they thought the person would need in the next life inside the spirit houses.

On the last day of the trip, our Susan had this to say about her trip, and doesn’t it sound like Susan’s hear!:

“It has been a wonderful adventure for me. Yellowstone was so beautiful. I enjoyed this trip so much. It was a fun family trip I have done. I got to see a lot of wonderful things. God is so wonderful. God is great, to see his beautiful work he has made for us to live in. I have been all over Alaska – top, across and bottom. Alaska is a most beautiful state to see. I am so blessed to see the whole world of Alaska. A letter from me, Susan Coon, to family and friends back home. PS thank you for the comments you have written on my mother’s blog.”

Susan has a bucket list and on it she had that she wanted to have another birthday party with her family in Massachusetts. As they wound up their trip, they stopped in Massachusetts and her aunt and uncle threw her a surprise birthday party! The surprise is that her birthday is in August. Susan was surprised and very happy!

I have included this because of our interest in our church family – good times that they have had. This was a very long trip and we enjoyed hearing about it along the way through Betty’s blogs. They have pictures to share and I will include just a few here. The front page of the bulletin is of Chugach Mountain in Alaska.

LEGEND OF THE DONKEY’S CROSS (Legend only, but the cross on the donkey’s back is puzzling.)

According to a poem she wrote that is often shared among Miniature Donkey enthusiasts, the cross is actual tribute to the love and loyalty of a humble creature. The Bible says that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a small donkey. The little animal loved him so much that when he was sentenced to be crucified, it wanted to help him bear the burden of the cross.
The donkey was driven away but returned to pay its respects when everyone else had gone. As it turned away sadly, the shadow of the cross fell over its shoulders. The mark has remained there ever since as a permanent tribute to the donkey's love and loyalty.
