Background/Problems

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s legacy of identifying leaders with potential to transform the health care delivery system within the United States is evidenced by the presence of graduate alumni from 10 human capital programs across the nation. The graduates of these programs proclaim the following benefits of this legacy:

1)Strong leadership development of both clinical and non-clinical leaders and scholars;

2)A vast network of professional colleagues that continue to enhance the growth and development of alumni beyond the program;

3)Desire to participate in the sourcing, support and development of future interprofessional human capital participants;

4)Actively participate and change the delivery of health care promoting low cost, high quality and high value across the delivery enterprise and

5)Promote a culture of health within a population health context and innovate solutions that sustain, improve the health status of all Americans.

In 2014, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced the closure of 10 current human capital programs and restructure/refocus programs to meet 21st Century Leadership needs. Key developmental principles included: a) expand the number of leaders and scholars supported; b) advance technological solutions to create networks that are increasingly interdisciplinary and diverse.

The Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Alumni Association proactively sought to connect with constituents representing former alumni of the closing programs, health care industry thought leaders and their membership.

Solution/Value Proposition

The federation of former and future graduates of the Robert Wood Johnson leadership development programs provides a broad interdisciplinary network of support, ongoing leadership development and generates innovative solutions to enhance the health of all Americans.

Guiding principles:

1)Source, support and promote the professional development of current and future interdisciplinary leaders for the next generation of healthcare.

2)Develop a strategies and tactics to address known and yet to be discovered population health needs across a broad array of communities (e.g., rural, urban, diverse ethnic groups, etc.) and stakeholders (e.g., clinicians, scholars, providers, employers, etc.).

3)Exploit the use of technology to connect and network shared best practices across subgroups.

4)Expand the Executive Nurse Fellows Alumni Association model and frame coordination across all former alumni and future human capital graduates.

5)Use current and future statewide Action Coalitions as a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration; devise, implement and evaluate projects and programs that improve health status.

6)Create a panel of advisors to inform health policy makers at the local, state and federal level using best practices promoting health and health care value.

7)Use experience with current relationships of national organizations (e.g., AARP) and companies (e.g., Target Corporation) and create future collaborative relationships with a wider array of stakeholders including employers, managed care companies, out of industry leaders, etc.

Conclusion

The creation of a facilitated network of all current RWJ human capital alumni and future culture of health practitioners, scholars and their associated constituencies will provide a unique opportunity to enhance the culture of health for all Americans. This network of supported and creative health care leaders will drive change that will ultimately impact the health of their local communities with regional and national influence. The organization’s primary purpose is to connect these thought leaders through a network of highly diverse interdisciplinary alumni and promotes ongoing leadership development.

The RWJ ENF Alumni Association will be the network catalyst and will work with the current RWJ Human Capital alumni and create a vision and preferred future for the federation. The Alumni Association will create a National Advisory Steering Team with representatives of all ten human capital programs. The Steering Team will create a vision, strategies and tactics in support of the facilitated network.
