Title / Prepare for, conduct, and review a series of Riding for theDisabled (RDA) sessions for a group of riders

Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in a self-managed capacity and who may have some responsibility for the performance of others, in a Riding for the Disabled (RDA) context.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to conduct, and conduct, a series of RDA riding sessions for a group of riders; andreview the sessions against the plan.

1Evidence requirements must be consistent with:

  • Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights
  • Privacy Act 1993
  • Vulnerable Children Act 2014
  • Animal Welfare Act 1999
  • Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Horses
  • All subsequent amendments to legislation listed above.

2The parent body of riding for the disabled is referred to as New Zealand Riding for the Disabled (NZRDA). All riding for disabled affiliated groups are referred to as Riding for the Disabled (RDA).

4Assessment

Evidence is required for a series of at least three RDA riding sessions.

The candidate may be assessed for outcome 2 using a provided plan, or a plan that they have developed themselves, such as that developed in Unit 26500, Plan a series of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) sessions for a group of riders.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare to conduct a series of RDA riding sessions for a group of riders according to NZRDA standards.

Evidence requirements

1.1Carry out safety checks of the working area and resources for the RDA session.

1.2Determine suitability and preparedness of horses and helpers for the session.

Outcome 2

Conduct a series of RDA riding sessions for a group of riders according to NZRDA standards.

Evidence requirements

2.1Introduce the sessions according to the session plans and short-term goals of riders in the group.

2.2Implement the method of teaching to match the riders skill levelsand session objectives.

2.3Maintain physical and emotional safety of horses and riders consistent with the skill level of the horses and riders, the equipment, the situation, and rider centred principles.

2.4Communicate effectively with riders with consideration for the riders’ disability.

2.5Maintain riders’ attention throughout the sessions.

2.6Demonstrate safe control of the riders, horses, and helpers.

2.7Close the sessions according to the session plans.

Outcome 3

Review the sessions against the plan.

Evidence requirements

3.1Review the session outcomes against the session plan and feedback from riders, helpers, and therapists to determine if thesessions’ short-term goals have been met.

3.2Modify the plan where coaching sessions do not meetthe planned objectives.
