Purpose of Job / Lead and direct the Commission’s Member State liaison, communication and programming. Attendance at commemorative events, maintaining close contact with High Commissioners in the UK and Ambassadors in key commemorative capitals.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Working with the Director of Public Engagement to identify strategies to widen the Commission’s community engagement and public activity in the UK into member government countries or diaspora communities.
- Identify and engage with the right partners in member countries to deliver (and secure funding for) such programmes.
- Support member states in their national commemorative programme, ensuring they link in with area resources and Secretariat, providing suitable CWGC representation.
- Manage pre-posting briefing for diplomats and Defence Attachés about the CWGC and educate the London-based diplomatic community on our work.
- Engage with the Commonwealth Secretariat, in particular, capitalising on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, taking place in the UK in 2018, ensuring CWGC visibility and involvement.
- Develop a Commonwealth government/Commission secondee programme, to develop a greater shared understanding and network of liaison points.
- Work with fellow directors to ensure all programming receives the necessary funding, and appropriate media and communications coverage.
- Travel and build networks within the commemorative sector in member and other Commonwealth governments.

Knowledge &qualifications/experience required
- Gravitas and status to be able to engage with senior Government representatives
- Understanding of the workings of Commonwealth governments, ideally through direct past engagement with several of the member states.
- Extensive experience in diplomatic, ceremonial and commemorative international engagement.
- Ability to travel and network within the commemorative sector in member and other Commonwealth governments.
- Good networking and interpersonal skills, and used to working in collaborative matrix environments.
- Interest in, or knowledge of First and Second World War history.
- A valid passport and full UK driving licence is essential.
- Right to work in the UK is essential.
