Social Studies Teacher-Leader Search

2015-16

The Maine Department of Education invites you to be part of the inaugural Social Studies Community Teacher-Leader Group. We seek current teachers of social studies (grades PK-12) who are interested in becoming regional leaders in social studies education. Every effort will be made to have the 18 members of the group represent all grade spans and geographic regions.

If interested, submit the Social Studies Community Teacher-Leader Application by Oct. 30, 2015. Teacher-Leaders will be notified of their selection by Nov. 6.

GROUP DESCRIPTION

  • Examine research-based practices that support student achievement of proficiency in Maine’s Learning Results for Social Studies.
  • Develop a statewide plan in PK-12 social studies education to expand on the knowledge and skills of teachers in order to improve teaching and learning.
  • Plan for and carry out a professional development opportunity to be delivered once at a regional event and once at a statewide summer event.

TEACHER-LEADER RESPONSIBILITES

  • Attend three day-long face-to-face sessions (Dec. 2, March 4, and May 4) in the classroom of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center on the University of Maine at Augusta campus.
  • Participate in two one-hour virtual meetings (in Jan. and Feb.; specific dates to be determined).
  • Contribute to the development of a statewide plan for elevating the teaching and learning of social studies.
  • Plan for and carry out a professional development offering in your region (sometime between March and May) and again at a statewide summer event (to be held one day the last week of June) in the greater Augusta area. The inclusion of formative assessment techniques and the sharing of at least one lesson plan will be expected.

COMPENSATION

  • $300.00 ($150.00 per workshop development and delivery)
  • Travel reimbursement (.44 per mile)
  • Overnight accommodations reimbursement for participants traveling more than two hours one-way for face-to-face sessions (State rate: up to $77 per night)
  • Substitute reimbursement (up to $85 per day)

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Complete the Social Studies Community Teacher-Leader Application (see form for detailed instructions) and submit to Kristie Littlefield by Oct. 30.
  • Participants will be notified of their selection by Nov. 6.
  • Note: There will be a $75.00 registration fee which includes all materials, resources and lunch for the three day-long sessions. This is payable by your district upon notification of selection.

Up to 18 Social Studies Community Teacher-Leaders will be selected on the basis of leadership potential, expressed level of interest and commitment to social studies education. Consideration will be given to the selection of Social Studies Teacher-Leaders to represent all grade spans (PK-12) and all regions of the state.
