1. Purpose

To describe the procedure for operating District trash compactors

2. Scope

This procedure applies to all Building Engineers and Custodians when operating trash compactors located in the Middle Schools and High School

3. Definition of Terms

None

4. Responsibilities

Building Engineers – Ensure this procedure is followed when operating the trash compactor. Train building custodians on proper trash compactor operations

Custodians – Ensure this procedure is followed when operating the trash compactors

Operations Supervisor – Ensure all Custodians are trained to operate the trash compactors and follow this procedure

Manager of Facilities & Grounds – Ensure all Building Engineers are trained to operate the trash compactors and follow this procedure

6. Procedure

6.1Building Engineers and Custodians shall:

6.1.1Attend training before operating the trash compactor

6.1.2Attend annual training on trash compactor operation

6.1.3Check the following prior to placing any item into a compactor:

  • The compactor is in good condition
  • The compactor safety switches are in place
  • All safety doors close and latch
  • Large compactors have the front door latched and locked in place
  • Power is available to the compactor
  • Nothing has been placed inside the compactor that should not be there

6.1.4Ensure items that are not placed in the compactor include but are

notlimited tothe following:

  • Paint
  • Large furniture
  • Long straight items
  • Construction debris
  • Asbestos material
  • Biohazard material
  • Gas or oil of any type
  • Computer or TV monitors

6.1.5Cycle the compactor through a complete cycle

6.1.6Add trash to fill the open area in the compactor only after the compactor completes a cycle.

6.1.7Not over fill or try to make things fit into the compactor by forcing them

6.1.8Not, under any circumstance get into the compactor

6.1.9Always cycle the compactor through a complete cycle. All items should be compacted below the level of the door, or in the case of the large compactor, it should be compacted out of the receiver area

6.1.9Ensure the compactor is turned off when finished compacting

6.1.10When finished remove the key if the compactor has one in it and place it in a designated location for others to operate the compactor. Never leave the key unattended in the compactor

6.1.11Not attempt to make any repairs to the trash compactor

6.1.12Call the Manager of Facilities & Grounds or the Operations Supervisor immediately if there are any problems operating the trash compactor

6.2Building Engineers

6.2.1Train building custodians on proper trash compactor procedures

6.3Manager of Facilities and Grounds shall:

6.3.1Ensure all Building Engineers are trained in the operation of the

trash compactors

6.3.2Ensure Building Engineers receive training annually on the

operation of the trash compactors

6.3.3Check and arrange for the repair of the trash compactor if a

problem is reported by a Building Engineer or Custodian

6.4Operations Supervisor shall:

6.4.1Ensure all Custodians are trained in the operation of the

trash compactors

6.4.2Ensure Custodians receive training annually on the

operation of the trash compactors

6.4.3Check and arrange for the repair of the trash compactor if a

problem is reported by a Building Engineer or Custodian
