  • A 2.5 hour lesson plan that can be used for an adult ESL class. The purpose of a lesson plan is to determine the candidate’s ability to create a plan within a specific time frame. It is not a description of an activity you might do in the classroom. Imagine a fictitious Intermediate ESL class of 25. The lesson plan should include objectives and materials for the lesson, a warm-up activity, review of previous lesson, the introduction and practice of new content, and recycling of previously learned material.The lesson plan needs to combine both ESL and Civics content. Instructional strategies on how to deal with a multi-level class may be included. Finally, explain how you would informally assess student learning.

Job Details

Class Terms: Fall term runs from mid-September to mid-December, for 12.5 weeks. Winter-Spring term runs from mid-January to early May, for 16weeks.

Class times: The class meets two evenings a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays).Coordination time is 6:00-6:30 p.m. Instructional time is 6:30-9:00 p.m. There are approximately 140 hours of instructional time in the 2017-2018 program year.

Salary: This employment classification is designated as ancillary employee, being paid for hours worked. This includes instruction, coordination, case management, staff meetings, and professional development. Compensation is $22.00 to $24.00 per hour.

Summary of job:
The ESL/Civics class teaches not only English as a Second Language but prepares students to achieve citizenship skills and increase community involvement by teaching American history, government and rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The teacher is responsible for the instruction and assessment of adult second language learners.

Written lesson plans are required. Periodic class observations by the Director of ESL Programs will be scheduled. The teacher is expected to participate in staff meetings and professional development.

Responsibilities:

  • Attendance at trainings and staff meetings
  • A new EL/Civics instructor is required to complete the EL/Civics online course offered through the State PD system.
  • Participation in student orientation and registration each semester
  • Pre and post assessment of students using formal and informal instruments
  • Use of students assessments in program planning
  • Written lesson plans addressing the CASAS Competencies and College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Class instruction
  • Monitoring students’ Core and Secondary Goals as well as Civics secondary goals
  • Monitor students’ attendance
  • Educational case management and disseminating information about community resources (provided by Vita) to help students overcome barriers to learning
  • Monthly data collection and reporting as required by grant guidelines
  • Participation in Vita approved professional development activities
  • Communication with staff
  • Compliance with Vita’s policies and procedures as specified in Vita Employee Policy Manual
  • Execution of other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Degree in education
  • Experience in teaching English as a Second Language, preferably adults
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and navigating the Internet
  • Familiarity with formal adult assessments
  • Creativity in designing lesson plans
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines
  • Maturity and sensitivity in working with diverse populations
  • Ability to move instructional materials to and from the classroom
  • Recent PA child abuse, criminal, and FBI clearances
