Good Morning/Afternoon. What did you learn about in your devotions at practice this week? Do you remember learning about patience? What is patience? Patience is waiting until later for what you want now.
Can anyone tell me what they want for their birthday this year? (Get a few responses from the players). Have you told your parents or grandparents what you want? Let’s say you asked your Mom or Dad for the latest video game. Your Mom told you that you would have to wait until your birthday to get it. Your birthday is several months away and you have to wait. You have to have a lot of patience to wait on your video game, even though your Mom promised you that you would get it. Sometimes while you are waiting on the present, you get impatient. You begg your Mom to give you the present early and she tells you that it’s not your birthday and you will have to keep waiting patiently for it. You may even think about getting a job to get the money to get the game before your birthday because you can’t wait any longer.
When your birthday finally arrives, you tear open the package that you think is the game you have been waiting for. Once you open the box, you not only find the game you asked for, but you find the sequel to the game you wanted. So now you not only have the game you wanted, but 2 games!
Sometimes God asks us to wait for something even though he’s promised it to us. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many people. But at a very old age, he was still without any children. Abraham and Sarah knew what God had told them but they had yet to see evidence of the promise in their lives. Abraham and Sarah trusted God and they waited patiently for him. This doesn't mean they waited perfectly. They took matters into their own hands at times. But God's grace covered them and he still fulfilled his promise, in his perfect timing.
God gives us what he promises us and sometimes he makes us wait patiently for it. God is near when we wait for Him give us what He promises. God can help us to have patience while we wait. The Bible tells us in Psalm 40:1 “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.” God understands our struggles with having patience while we wait. He will help us when we ask Him to.
Let’s pray. Father, thank you for being near as we wait patiently on you in our lives. Help us to wait patiently for you to answer our prayers. Amen.
